15 months ago I pressed about 50 gallons of cider and put it in my garage in a plastic 55 gallon drum to make vinegar. I just poured up a gallon and it looks very light and smells a bit funny. I can imagine that the light color is from it being very settled. But what about it needing more time...
Here is a link for some real good salt.
It is for an eleven pound bag (@ $2.64/lb). If you call them, they may sell you a 50lb bag.
With shipping prices the way they are, I don't think you'll be able to get the real good stuff for less than less than about $2/lb.
I've mistreated my kefir before and ended up with grains that would not propagate. I could culture the milk, but the little buggers would just not grow.
I finally ended up killing them and had to get more from my mom. She had grains from the same batch I had given her 3 years earlier. Way to go Mom!

I just got 4 nice big ones. I'm using 2 for picnic tables and 2 for the goats.

Also, you can use them to play on yourself if your up to it. Standing on them and rolling around you feel like your in the circus!
Someone once said a long time ago, "salt is good."

Bottled up a big batch of Kombucha to sell on consignment at the local health food store! Didn't make any money yet. At the very least I can drink it for way less than I could buy it for!
I'm trying to get a project off the ground for a group of young boys.
We want to build a wind turbine, solar panels to to heat up water, convert a car to run on water (they're sure they can do it) and much more.. lots of zeal.
It's all so vast for me though...
So, How hard is it to build a...
I've been doing a little investigating on solar hot water systems.
I came across this site and thought it was pretty good. It is selling a book, but goes into the basics of it on the site.

I don't think I'm going to build one, but hopefully someone could...
