I think I use about 8000sq ft for everything we grow. Veggies, berries, and grain. That's about 1/5 of an acre. The rest of the place is for the critters.
Don't know if you saw this. The link is to another thread where I posted a pic from google earth after I did a little art work on it. You...
Wow! I didn't really expect such a response. I just meant to share a hard learned lesson. "Don't count your chickens before they're hatched". :/
We certainly aren't going to go hungry, but we had such a grand vision and it just washed away. We had one storm in particular that dropped over 5"...
Yeah I know, this title was already used, but if you'll indulge me for a moment, I would like to approach the question from a different angle without hijacking FC's thread.
Most of us here garden to varying degrees. My garden has been getting larger every year for the last 3 years...
Here's what I tell them, and I HAVE said this to a couple people.
I'm taking reservations for SHTF Day. You can "buy in" now for $10,000 or $1,000 face value in pre "65" silver coins. You may renew your reservation every year for $5,000 or $50 in silver. In the event there is no SHTF Day, there...
Thanks BBH but it's far from heaven. The house itself is 150 yrs old. Water in the cellar with every heavy rain, no insulation except where I have replaced windows, heavy clay soil with an endless supply of rocks, that took 5 yrs to get to the point where we could grow a decent garden, and...
Where to start?
Predators? In a way. The Banty coop is in the dog run area with the 5 dogs so they have quickly learned to hightail it into the coop when the dogs come out, even though they are completely enclosed and safe from them. The adult hens run free with the dogs. Unfortunately the dad...
Our son picked up a few bantams a couple months ago. Before we knew it they had 22 eggs and 2 of the hens started sitting. Last Friday they started hatching. By Sunday we had 17 peeps.
Shortly after they the banty's started sitting so did one of my hens. She was on 13 eggs. On Wed. they...
I did a job for a couple that were doing some major remodeling on their house. The contractor put a dumpster in the driveway for all the stuff he tore out. I climbed in and threw out all the salvageable wood I could find and with it, I threw this together. It's all from the dumpster except the...
9 Nubian/Alpine mix, 1 Boer/Nubian mix, and 1 pygmy that we were given last Dec. who had 2 kids at the end of March. Both buckling's.
Despite our best efforts, this one died a week later.
This one is becoming quite the feisty little buck.
Here we are from Google Earth. This was taken before we added any outbuildings. The red outline is the property line. (Roughly) The white outline is the fenced area for the horses and donkeys. The red square in the pasture is the chicken coup.
The house is in the lower left hand corner. The...
Now that you have everything you need to put it to use, We/I would like to hear a review as to it's capabilities. :hide plz :)
We just cut our small patch of red winter wheat. I've cleaned and bagged about 30# so far but we haven't procured the means to turn it into flour yet. Everything I've...

Unfortunately it is here. We had such a cool, wet, sun deprived spring that it spread quickly. I just pulled up 2/3 of my plants and burned them. It doesn't seem to have spread to all of them yet, but I'm watching a lot closer now. I did get about 30lbs from the 25 plants I pulled but that's a...
I don't remember a version of this by the Doobies but then I'm getting old and senile  I had it on a 45 (remember those?) by Three Dog Night when they came to my hometown in 1971. Took it with me hoping to get it autographed. Silly me.
