It needs to stay moist, not dry out, but also tends to sour, so you rinse to prevent the sour.

Okay now that we have the sprouts down, what about fermenting grains? How/why is it better for the chickens? Do I understand this correctly: place grains in bucket, cover w/ water, put in yogourt (or some bacteria source) let sit at least 12 hrs. Then like sourdough starter each day take our...

What can you tell me about these chicken breeds?

Don't exactly know what you are looking for in your chickens you never said, but since you started out talking about cornish x I'm assuming you want a good meat bird? Assuming that I would say since they are hatchery birds to begin w/ they likely will all be decent layers so I would decide...

Yes, that is the way my gma sprouted for us to eat for years. Use the ring portion of the lid and use an old cleaned pair of panyhose, or cheesecloth at the lid. Rinsing is as easy as filling w/ water "swishing it around" and pouring through the cloth. If you are going to sprout 6 quarts a...

Does anyone use old carpet for garden walkways?

I tried it for an easy cheap "mulch"......... wouldn't recommend that, the ground under it stayed DRYER the the surrounding soil, and the weight from the wet carpet compacted the soil horribly. It did however work as an effective weed barrier.

Find of the century!! (for me anyway)

You can mow over the dried "patties" w/ a bagging mower and that makes it easier to apply evenly to the garden.

The Homesteader's Way of Feeding Chickens

Just fed the girls their first sprouts, it was a hit, they really liked them. The burlap sacks and buckets worked great, at day 4 the grain was good and sprouted, no rancid odor, no additional rinsing, no mold. It literally took a few minutes a day of care at the most.

    going GF? test results...

Lori, I am truly sorry for your circumstance. I have been GF for several years and even though at first I would have sold my firstborn for a yeast roll, I would never go back to eating gluten for anything, ever. The change was so drastic for me, before I went gf I NEVER had one day w/o intense...

    I have an idea...

This week I got something at the feed store meant for calves, but seemed like a good winter treat for the girls when I put them in for the night, to keep them warm and full. It was cracked corn, alfalfa pellets, and molassas, it was $6-7 for 50lbs.

The Homesteader's Way of Feeding Chickens

I am just starting so I don't have a "proper" answer, but I have started out w/ just less then 2 lbs of oat seed (the size of container I had) for 23 chickens. Mine get their first sprouts tomorrow, mine are not "green" sprouts, only 4 day old sprouts. I plan on adjusting as needed, until I...

The Homesteader's Way of Feeding Chickens

I just started sprouting for my chickens this week. I started w/ oats b/c it was the most affordable grain at the feed store. My system involves 2, 3 gall buckets and 1.5 yards of burlap sewn into 4 sacks, and 4 clippy's marked 1-4. I am placing the oats in one sack and in the bucket w/...
