Got the whole family out tonight picking the tomatoes and raspberries that were ready because frost/freeze is predicted here. Then we covered as many plants as we could find old blankets, fabric & towels for. Hopefully we'll save some of the food. It was the most fun we've had as a family in a...
Sunday I did get my pickles canned and some chili base. I did get to see my parents too. They are in their 70's and I try to see them every other week at least.
We've been pick raspberries as much as possible and I've been throwing them in the freezer, waiting for enough to make a batch of...
I've been hinting to hubby about the chickens. That might take a bit. He had goats as a kid, and from the comments he makes, I do not see that happening.
You'll have to enlighten me on fermenting chickens!:lol:
Yesterday I did a batch of pizza sauce in the canner, 5 & 1/2 pints. We had a...
Welcome! I'm kinda new too. Your lifestyle (current) sounds really adverturous! There was nothing offensive in your answers. Good luck with your new life!
Thanks for the warm welcomes. I have learned so much ready on this forum.
I canned this summer for the first time. I did blueberry jam, triple berry jam, salsa, spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce, chili base and all kinds of pickles. I only did waterbath canning. Thinking about a pressure canner, as...

I have a round Ronco w/no fan. I picked it up at a thrift store for $15. Since I had never dehydrated before, I thought it might be better to start out as inexpensive as possible and see if I felt it was worth a more expensive model. I've only had it a few weeks and haven't used it much, but I...
These are great tips! Lucky for me hubby volunteered to do the peppers. He said it didn't bother his hands, but the corn he had for lunch had a little extra zip. :D
Wow, kellys, you've been busy!
Today I did
8 quarts pickles
5 pints bread & butter pickles
14 pints salsa
Picked some raspberries, but not enough for jam. I'll have to freeze them until I have enough for a batch. :D
I wish so much I could just give you and your kids a hug. My thoughts will be with your family at this difficult time.
And, btw, you do deserve and are worthy of being loved. Don't ever tell yourself otherwise.
This was the recipe I used, I have not tried it yet. I love kohlrabi too, but I can't stand it cooked. So I was hoping I would enjoy this.
Ingredients
3 each kohlrabi peeled, sliced
2 large carrots
2 each garlic cloves crushed
1 each bay leaf
3 large dill weed sprigs
Pickling mixture...
Today I canned pickled kohlrabi & carrots. A co-worker was raving about it and I thought I'd give it a try. If no one here likes it, at least I know someone I can pawn it off on. I also peeled & chopped tomatoes for salsa tomorrow. Its too late to get that going tonight.
I found this one in my canning book (have not tried it):
1 cup cider vinegar
1/4 cup water
4 tsp liquid honey
2 tsp pickling spice
2 tsp pickling salt
2 cloves garlic, halved
1/2 lb jalepeno peppers, seeded & thinly sliced
Combine vinegar, water, honey, pickling spic & salt in small sauce...
Hubby used one for a watering can. I cut the top part of and just used the lower part as a container to collect rags in before washing. I was thinking about using them for container gardening?
I thought of a couple more ideas......
If there is a place to donate plasma near by, you could possibly make some extra $$ there. You would have to verify the reporting if you get over $600, as I am not sure if they send out 1099s. I don't think they do around here.
I have not used it in a...
