MEAT BIRDS THREAD ~Plans, pics, pens, pluckers, processing! GRAPHIC!

I'm just always curious as to the cost of things. Gives me another angle of perspective dealing with folks who don't live this kind of "lifestyle" (like my Mom but thats a whole nother ballgame  :gig ) We actually had a few free range CX's last year (picked some up from TSC just to...

MEAT BIRDS THREAD ~Plans, pics, pens, pluckers, processing! GRAPHIC!

I'm wanting to keep track of feed costs as well vs final output vs weight for a good overall cost analysis. I think I'll get some soil samples from the dirt as well, before and after and have them analyzed to see how big of a difference it makes. 1 bad of pearled barley is $10 and the clabber is...

MEAT BIRDS THREAD ~Plans, pics, pens, pluckers, processing! GRAPHIC!

We'll probably be doing a batch. We need some dense fertilization in the garden area and the most productive way we can come up with is a batch of meaties. They'll probably be tractored for a week or so, w/daily moving, before they get free run of the area (35'x100' approx) and I want to try a...

    Makeshift plow

Hmm, well, I think I have part of the issue figured out! Walked outside and whats been sitting in the driveway for 6 months? These! After DH's truck was totaled, the frame was bent right where the reciever hitch bolts up. These are the wings that attatch from the straight bars to the frame...

    Makeshift plow

I didn't even think of youtube, :hide Thank you! DH can weld, but the welder we got here is a small crappy one. Barely welds cattle panels together! We got a welding shop close we can take something to if need be though. We've got tons of pipes, lumber and such. I got a drag made out of...

    Makeshift plow

I pitchfork would be bent in a heartbeat here.. I've straightened out the two we have several times already  I was thinking something I could put behind the 4wheeler and drag around. I wonder if a railroad tie with some cultivator tines would do any good, hmmm....

    Makeshift plow

Any of yall taken stuff laying around and made some sort of makeshift plow? I've got enough old saw blades to make a makeshift harrow, but was trying to figure out how to make something strong enough to plow/rip the expanded garden area since its mostly grass. (The chickens aren't doing a very...

    storing raw milk...

OR chick is right... when raw milk is properly soured it turns into clabber. Good stuff for chickens, pigs, and cheese culturing. Good probiotic as well. Mine stores just over 2wks before I notice a change. For butter, skim off the cream and churn it.

how much rest do you get..........how much rest is normal?

I get anywhere from 4-10 hours, depending on how rundown I let myself get. Up at 6am M-F and usually anywhere from 6-10am on the weekends. Usually get to bed between 10pm-2am. A few rare nights I'll go to bed around 930pm after having run ragged all day.

    Air Conditioning

I thought it was the unit, but the cost was the same with the 25yo (give or take) unit as the brand new one :idunno Interesting about the heat strips.. I'll tell DH about that and have him double check everything again. On that note.. he did try and check the other day, but his leads don't...

    Air Conditioning

Thanks for the link Bee.. the solar screens sounds doable (the house has NO screens, grrr) and some other good ideas there. Deb, yeah I just reminded DH to bring home the stuff to test the unit, since its not raining and nice and sunny out today. He was thinking the wiring must be off somewhere...

    Air Conditioning

The unit was brand new installed last Spring, energy star rated for high efficiency even. There should be NO reason the dadblastid bill should be that high.. We kept an eye on usage, and last Oct, when it finally started to cool down and we cut the AC off most of the month, the KWH used went...

    Air Conditioning

Georgia gets hot and humid, aint no doubt about that!!! The AC/heat pump unit was replaced last spring, the previous unit was 20+yrs old The problem is even the new unit bumps the electric bill up $300 or more EACH MONTH!!! :ep Doesn't matter if its heat or a/c. We've gotten by with using the...

    Once a day Milking

I did some share milking with my girl while she was fostering calves last year. Seperate at night, milk in the AM then put calf back in with her the rest of the day. You will probably not get much cream, since she'll hold up for the calf, but somethin is better then nothing :) Dairy cows peak...
