Worrying!
When you have so many animals in your backyard, there is ALWAYS something to worry about! Are the horses in the pasture? Are they up and grazing or on the ground thrashing? Is the coop shut? Is there anything prowling around my barn? Is there anything in the livetrap or legtrap? Does...
Okay. So every single one of her eggs hatched. Only one chick didn't make it, made it out of the egg, but I don't think the yolk was fully absorbed, or he got smushed. She has 11 little fluffy buts are crowded in the nest with her. I will add pictures later today. :)
I was feeding the animals this morning and passed my rabbit hutch that had a broody sitting on some eggs. I stopped to think, I don't remember how long she'd been sittig on them so I decided to check and see if they had busted and eaten the eggs. We had both of our previous broodies do it, so we...
 For some reason when I first glanced at the title the "!" looked like an L. So, I thought this article was about " veal. it's adoption time." :P Just thought I'd share in my hallucinations.
I would imagine cockerels would be bigger, quicker.
The other reason, I think they would be all cockerels, is because since people want more pullets than cockerels, most hatcheries have a surplus of cockerels. So, I think buying the assorted, heavy breed "left over" cockerels is cheaper. That...
Sounds good. We'll have to plant those few cloves of elephant garlic and then get some regular garlic to add to the garden with all this talk of garlic. It is one of the main spices used in our kitchen, it only makes sense to grow it in the backyard. :)
Here is a question on planting garlic. A friend of ours gave us a few cloves of Elephant Garlic(which I learned is not actually garlic) and I want to plant it, but I was told you only plant garlic in fall.
Will the cloves go bad sitting in the house?(I didn't think so, but thought I'd ask...
Oh, I realize that, that last article was for SS rabbit discussion in general and not to your dilema specifically. But if you did, you could always size it down.
The bunny facts were for you and your husband. We have big sandy spots in our yard where the grass just doesn't grow because we live...
This was copied from another gardening/SS forum, I hate to copy without credit, but I know we can't post links to other similar forums. Anyway, here is another use for rabbits and the article is not mine.
Thought it was cool.
My hubby is usually opposed to getting new animals, but the rabbits were the exception. He absolutely loves the rabbits. The key is to boggle his mind with facts, after I told my hubby the factual benefits of rabbits(we raise them for meat) he was thrilled to find the facts to be true. If it...
Came home, fed the animals and went to check the goose nest for any new eggs. I have given them 15, which they have been setting, so I was taking any newly laid to avoid a scatterhatch.
Shoo the mother goose away, move the fir branches, and move the pineneedles aside only to find.. NOTHING. My...
One day in the next couple of years, my husband and I plan on moving to Virginia and buying a farm. An orchard is definately in the plans and we have a few fruit trees here.
My SS goals, include growing the vast majority of our food. I plan to cut grocery stores out of the picture as much as...
Let's see..
Hatching out 57 Coturnix Quail and not making sure the cord suspending the heat lamp was completely secure.. It slid down a few inches and roasted 7 baby quail underneath it. It broke my heart. Because we planned to eat them, but the thought of them dying that way just killed me...
If it some how came to be that a couple of Nigerian Dwarf does showed up in my backyard/horse pasture. Would they stay inside an electric fence? Be honest!
We bought a trio of NZ/CA mutt rabbits and have raised about 3 litters. Selling them and eating those that don't sell. Then we purchased a trio of Silver Fox rabbits, but the youngest decided it wasn't going to be a buck and decided to be a doe instead. No biggie. Now, due to a very unfortunate...
Whoops, learn something new everyday. I assumed they were rodents because of how prolific they are and because like rodents their teeth continually grow. So while I never read or was told they were rodents, I made a scientific guess, a wrong guess. LOL
