Do You Have Livestock on 3A or Less?

We have 1 acre. Approximately 1/3 ac is fenced for the permanent pasture for the sheep and goats. We also have a smaller pen that's roughly 16X14 or 20X14 (can't remember) for animals during weaning, breeding, etc. Our maximum animal load was probably 2 adult ewes, 1 ram, 1 doe, 1 buck, 50...

Fels Naphta versa Octagon Bar soap for laundry detergent?

I've got another question....are you making sure to put them in the dryer (or line) soon after washing? Sometimes when it's really hot out our clothes will get that funky smell if they're left in the washer for even a day before going to the dryer. They'd be slightly off smelling, but I tried...

Fels Naphta versa Octagon Bar soap for laundry detergent?

Do your clothes actually smell like BO when they go *in* the wash? I ask because I think sometimes the homemade detergent leaves the smell. I noticed sometimes our clothes would actually smell like urine or some other funky smell after being washed and dried. :hide

    Stock up alert!

I'm so frustrated because we live in an area that's rural and almost all ag. Unfortunately, it's mostly commodity crops (corn, beans, wheat, and chickens). That means our fruits and veggies tend to be pretty pricey. The one thing I found a good deal on was asparagus earlier this year. I talk...

    I am weirded out ...

My stepkids call me by my first name, so it's hard for me to think of myself as anything but Katie. I told one of DSS's friends to call me Mrs. ____, and it felt so weird! I guess I"m just used to having kids call me by my first name. :P

    I am weirded out ...

I don't get bothered by it, although at 30 I'd say I'm too young to be a ma'am. I just see it as being polite. Some guys I know say it to everyone, like one of the farmers my age (actually a year or two younger) who comes in to work. We're friends, but he still says yes ma'am all the time to...

    Soap Making 101

Ok thanks for all the great tips. I definitely will make another batch and not refrigerate it. I think I'll do a double batch this afternoon and maybe try a different mold too. I really like the more square look your soap has, Free. I did touch my tongue to it last night and didn't get...

    Soap Making 101

Ok, how did you get yours cut so well, Free? I took my soap out of the mold today (mold worked great!) and when I cut it I left it on the cookie sheet, which wasn't the flattest or most solid surface, so it was not the most successful cutting I could have had. It's pretty crumbly. Is...

    Are You....

We are very careful with money but we also spend money on entertainment. Sometimes we'll go out to eat (or order a pizza), and even though home cooking is way cheaper (and often times better), sometimes we just want a break. We took a vacation this year with tax refund money. Yeah, that money...

    Stock up alert!

Our grocery store had a sale on pigeon peas....1 lb bags for $.37. I got about 8 or 10 of them. I have no clue what to put them in, so I googled and it looks like they're frequently cooked with rice. I think I'll can some to add in soup later on.

    John C. Campbell Folk School

Has anyone ever heard of it or taken a class there? Each year I get the catalog and then spend weeks dreaming about all the classes I'd like to take. I can't quite afford it though, but eventually my sister and I would love to take a class there every year. They offer so many kinds of...

Holachicka ~ Up till 3 am, but...

Typically people call bad hay cow or goat hay since ruminants' systems aren't quite as touchy as a horse's digestive system. Ruminants can handle small amounts of mold without colicking like horses will, but that doesn't mean they *should* be fed moldy hay at all. Plus, cattle and goats are...

    Real Food in hospitals!

An older gentleman was telling us at work that he was at the hospital because of chest pains. Turns out he has to have bypass surgery (I think he had it yesterday), but anyways, he mentioned to us he got lunch from the hospital while he was there. He mentioned a soda and chips!!! What the...

Would you want your significant other to join this forum?

I wouldn't mind at all if DH posted here. He doesn't "do" forums though. He's a very slow typer and doesn't have the patience to sit at the computer for very long...unless he's searching CL for more vehicles.
