75 minute commute? Yikes. I used to have one of those. I ran away...screaming!
Ok, I knew that there must have been something I missed. Thanks for keeping me straight. See, it's because I'm here and not over there. :D
Though, speaking of over there, I do know what you mean...
Yes, my co-workers also note the time I am on the computer. They get emails at all hours of the night! I had one co-worker recently shoot me an email back around midnight (that rarely happens!) teasing me for not knowing when to quit working. Haha!! If she only knew I was just getting...
Mmmm. Coconut oil. Great stuff! Inside and out.
FarmerChick, my hubby is great with our little one, too. Isn't it great to have that? They have a blast together, and my husband puts my son to bed almost every night--they have daddy and baby time--baby gets a bath, and then they read...
There's definitely a difference between wanting a career and creating a situation by which you need the career to live a "lifestyle", where lifestyle = gross wastefullness. I by no means am trying to judge anyone who A) desires a career (I've been there!) B) has said career and is doing well...
Ah, the seemingly never-ending farm project...we always have a few of those on the never-ending list of farm projects!
It's going to look great when it's finished, though.
You could try whitewashing, but you will have to constantly maintain it. The elements (rain primarily) are going...
Never heard about the manure and blood floor. Though I do have a link somewhere to make manure bricks for heating fuel, if anyone cares to give it a go. :P
Straw bale construction is beautiful and very energy efficient. A friend of mine lived in a straw bale house in New Mexico for a few...
WOW FarmerChick, what a collection of great "recipes!" *sigh* If only I had the time for spa treatments at home....I'm lucky if my toddler lets me take a shower long enough to shave my legs! Nevermind the fact that the entire time I'm taking said shower, he's pulling the curtain out and...
I mean, I know the site is real and all. We've got tons of great sub-forums, a handy-dandy-link-a-ma-doohicky on all 4 of Rob's forums to go back and forth as we please, a few members trickling on over here from BYC and TEG, and some great conversation amongst a few already regulars...but has...
I agree with The Simple Life. After all, it is just soap--there's got to be a way to adjust things so that it will still result in an effective detergent. Post what went into that bucket--it can be figured out! :D
You could use horse feed instead. You want to find one that is close to goat feed in terms of nutritional requirments--you may have to watch out for things like selenium, copper, etc. Try looking at www.fiascofarm.com This a web site with a lot of great information on goatkeeping, dairy goats...
Maybe I should have put it another way--I agree, there are a lot of people doing these things (things that we call frugal, self-sufficient, "green", what have you). Yes, I get a lot of strange looks from people when I tell them I have chickens for eggs, but I have also met a lot of people who...
It would depend on what medication you are talking about. Different medications, different withdrawal times...and also, different effects on you. ;) In a nutshell, you probably don't want to drink milk from a medicated goat because, well, that would mean you would be drinking the medication...
Lots of great responses to think about! I appreciate everyone's input. I find it fascinating.
Pat, I agree, these things might not be as "rare" as my somewhat limited viewpoint, having only lived in one place, may make it seem. I grew up and live in an area that has, until very recently...
Hey there!! Well, there's no "welcome to sufficient self" smilie, so I guess this will have to do: :woot
or: :ya
or, a pic of me tomorrow morning 'cause I stayed up way too late on BYC, TEG, and SS: :caf
Ooohh, CityChook, chamomile! What a great idea.
Baby wipes are handy things to have around, as I have discovered since having a baby--I'm sure that these ideas & recipes could be used for lots of other things!
As a spin-off of Better Half's "What does self sufficient mean to you", I'd like to start a discussion on why "self-sufficient" (or, conserving, living simply, do-it-yourself, etc.) is a rarity and not the norm?
I'm truly interested in why it's alien to most to even think about being...
I suppose at the core of my attempts to be more self-sufficient, it means not having to depend on the "stuff" that "they" say I "need." For sure, there's a lot more to it than that, but I guess that would be my in-a-nutshell description.
What I want out of being more self-sufficient is more...
Wow. Gorgeous. Major porch envy here. We don't have a porch at all, and boy do we want one!
And way to re-use materials. Awesome! :woot
And, OT, but I love Asheville. We thought very long and hard and seriously about moving there, but we couldn't find anything within our price range...
