    Help decorate SS for Halloween!

I cant remember where I saw the post (probably not here) but someone suggested that it is easier to cut the bottoms out of your pumpkin for easy seed + flesh removal. While this is true, my nieghbor and I both had super moldy gross (but no less in the spirit of halloween) pumkpins within just a...

    Batches of Basil

I make pesto and freeze it -ALOT of it for use all winter... But I also make "dipping" oil and freeze that too in plastic containers . And you dont need nuts for dipping oil (one less trip to walmart is a good thing ;) )! For dipping oil just cut fresh basil, oregano, rosemary and lemon thyme...

challenge: reducing petroleum footprint on food - 1 meal/week

My thought too, why on earth do I have a French or even CA wine when it's just as good (for me that is) from a half hour away or better yet, the neighbor gave me some plum wine she made herself.... Growing up in Alaska made me think about this a very long time ago. Not only was all of the food...

    Well water question...

You are so smart to question this. Definitely get the water tested yourself, a small price to pay that could save you the tons Culligan wants to "not save you." We are super far away from you but our Well Water by FAR is healthier and way better tasting than city water! Every time the developers...

challenge: reducing petroleum footprint on food - 1 meal/week

VERY good point... Whether it's Petroleum used to transport and package food or petroleum actually IN food, it is something to be considered!

challenge: reducing petroleum footprint on food - 1 meal/week

create that one (bumper sticker) and I'll put it on my car (and mountain bike) too!!! Yeah, I find it very hard to get all the way past fossil fuel use. But with stats like those that Steven Hopp has found, even getting as close as you can x alot of people could make a significant impact...

I know that people will survive but.... (a whine)

I actually like hearing your opinion and all opinion, helps me to understand where people are coming from and to make best decisions I can if I understand all perspectives. I wouldnt even try to change other people opinions. I heard more issues than just legallizing pot though.... And in fact...

I know that people will survive but.... (a whine)

I'm curious what evidence supports this and how you are sure this will happen, when as I've said - I've already lived in a legalized pot system and experienced the reverse of what you are saying will happen. My evidence/personal experience is what I base my feeling that it wont create a more...

challenge: reducing petroleum footprint on food - 1 meal/week

Of course the idea comes from Barbara Kingsolver but try it... Try to see if you can eat just 1 meal / week with either zero or as close to zero as you can get, petroleum impact... It's HARD! Today however, I ate ham, eggs, toast and salsa with LOW petroleum impact (my Dad did use his truck...

I know that people will survive but.... (a whine)

I'm confused about the connection between pot and tires made in china? Or is it just part of a bad day? Either way, I grew up in Alaska when pot was legal there.... All of our parents had it in our gardens along side the broccoli and tomatoes(it's a natural pesticide). My Dad is a University...

    who has rain barrels?

SORRY! So true on me, I can be an accidental thread stealer! I really intend to "grow" my rain collection this winter and also VERY interested in hydro power - solar is great but hydro can rock way harder in Alaska - where we intend to "retire." So hoping this thread continues on rain...

    who has rain barrels?

OMG!! Can I PM you? I'm SO EXCITED to get your poo!! Seriously though I am.... My Boy friend knows that I'm the lowest maintenance/cheapest date he's ever had... I'd rather see him driving up with a truck load of poo than anything else, seriously!!!! And actually I wanted to get a load or so...

    who has rain barrels?

I really do love these RIR girls, they have great personalities and they are so low maintenance, then lay perfect, pretty eggs. I feel really lucky with these gals... I look at other chickens and wish I had a variety, there are so many cool looking breeds, but why push my luck at this...

    who has rain barrels?

That was "big brown baby box" when my hens were little and just moved outside. Now it's been moved just around the corner to make room for "big blue dog house reno." It currently provides chicken supply storage (until our next batch of babies that is)!!! The girls are still very fond of it!

    who has rain barrels?

I started out just using this (got free from local water company even though we are on own well) for chicken water in the winter but then not using it in the summer because I dont have a great lid system yet and it will house mosquito babies when stagnet. That's just super lame on my part so now...
