    freezing snap beans

Thanks for the responses. I knew it was what I was supposed to do, but I like knowing why I'm doing things  That is kinda what I was thinking. I don't get enough of them at one time to can anyway. It would take me half the season to get enough to make it worth the trouble of canning, so...

    freezing snap beans

I usually freeze my beans until I have enough to can them. I know you are supposed to blanch the beans before freezing (and I do), I'm just curious if anyone knows why.

    told hubby ain't happening!

I know how you feel. When we first got my jeep my DH wanted to put a lift kit on it. I'm only 5 ft tall, so that would be a problem. He also insisted that he needed to put New Orleans Saint's stickers on it just like he has on his cars. I told him to keep his hands off my Jeep!!!! If he wants...

Is it financially worth it to buy a meat grinder

Thanks everyone!! OK. This one is definately going at the top of my wish list and is to be purchased ASAP. I'd love to make my own sausage. We go through soooo much sausage during football season and I'm really geting tired of buying it!! Using it for relishes would be great too! My great aunt...

Really Really bad neighbor problem help please!!

If I was the LL I'd be extremely concerned about aggressive dogs being allowed on my property. I bet his insurance company would be very interested to know this is happening and the he is OK with it.

Is it financially worth it to buy a meat grinder

I've been thinking about the fact that a chuck roast is usually at least a dollar less expensive per lbs than ground chuck and that it might be worth buying a meat grinder and grinding it myself. I was wondering how many of you do this or have done it and if you think it is worth the time to do...

how to search for topic on this forum plz?

OK. I get how to search for a thread, but once the search gives me some options and the thread is like 250 pages, is there a way to search within that thread. For example what I am trying to figure out right now is, should I buy a meat grinder and start grinding my meat instead of buying it...

    How many acres is enough?

I love this idea. We are planning to look for 5 - 10 acres depending on the area we buy in and what is affordable at the time. I'd say buy as much as you can afford and keep whatever you do no need wooded. The wood would be there if you need it and you can clear areas for expansion.

Dreaming of Chickens - Rocky and Carlo's

I know this isn't self sufficiency related, but I know a few of the members here are from the S.E. Louisiana area and would want to know about this. http://www.nola.com/news/index.ssf/2012/02/fire_damages_rocky_and_carlos.html From what I hear it is just the kitchen. The rest of the building...

    Anyone know about rice?

I haven't grown any myself, but from what I have read it's really easy. Some of the things I've read said you can buy it from a supplier or even get brown rice from the store (white is processed, so won't work) and basically trow it in about 4" of soil cover with water (I forget how deep) and...

What are you planting this year?

So far I've started seeds for onion, radishes, 4 kinds of tomatoes, bell pepper, jalapeno and two other hot peppers, and corn (about a week early on the corn, but I think we'll be OK). Soon I will be adding a kitchen window herb garden starting with dill and chive. Haven't decided what else to...

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

Hopefully canning some ground chuck tonight or tomorrow night. Rouse's Supermarket has it on sale, so I think I'm gonna pick up about 20 lbs. Some will go in the freezer, but it'll be my first time using my pressure canner. I'm so excited!! :celebrate

Dreaming of Chickens - Rocky and Carlo's

:D sorry. I am actually surprised. These are last years plants that didn't do anything at all and in December they decided to start flowering. We had an exceptionally warm winter, even for this area. So, really I'm not ahead of you, I'm way behind! ;)
