I like chard, and had good success with it in my garden last year. It was so colorful! Yellow, red, purple, green and white.

Seems to me book knowledge is the first step, really... sure, personal experience helps, but then, if you don't have the personal experience, and no one to turn to, books are the logical first step.

M always made it with sourdough bread (had to be sourdough) that was cubed, onion, celery, salt, pepper, eggs, boiled turkey giblets and the broth they were cooked in. Oh, and celery salt (seasoning?) I think. Then she baked it till crispy on top.
