    Earache

Learned this one when my DD was an infant and having chronic ear infections and reacting to all the meds drs would give and they were starting to talk about putting tubes in. 1 part rubbing alcohol and 1 part apple cider vinegar. I keep it in a little dropper bottle I got from the pharmacist. A...

Complete Chicken Nutrition, No Buying Feed - How?

You might want to check out this book. http://www.amazon.com/Permaculture-Chicken-Pasture-Basics-ebook/dp/B00BFE60Y0/ref=pd_sim_b_2 By Anna Hess. I got it the other day (mine was a free download but it is only 99 now) haven't read it all yet but the glance through she gives some good ideas...

    Mail Order Chickens

They should be fine. Just give plain water or if you feel you MUST do something else give a little electrolytes. Think about it if you are really thirsty do you want sugar water or plain water. It takes more for the body to process the sugar. Just dip their beaks in the water as you take them...

    Best bug repellent?

Pennyroyal took care of a massive flea problem I had years ago both inside and out. I think I remember it shouldn't be used ON cats though.

How have you been dealing with changed weather?

Growing lots of tadpoles and mosquitoes. I have managed to keep about half the tomatoes alive but they aren't producing, butter beans are just starting, squash rotted and died, green beans drowned and never came up even after three plantings all with different seed, had to plant corn twice but...

    Salvaging leeks gone to seed

Hmm. I have some of the same problem. Spindly little leeks that bolted. I decided to let them go to seed and reseed the bed naturally and see what happens. In the mean time the honey bees are loving the flowers. I might have to check a few to see if they have bulbs.

Anybody grown jalapeos outdoors in containers?

I will agree with Moolie about the 50 temp also. The gallon contianers should be ok. In my experience peppers don't have huge root systems. Moolie's point about planting in larger pots so the roots don't get too hot is a good one too but if you find that to be a problem you can spray paint them...

Anybody grown jalapeos outdoors in containers?

Yes, I have grown all sorts of peppers in pots with great success. Our temps are much higher than yours but your summer is close to our late fall early winters and often my peppers are still going at that time. When it starts getting really cool at nights consistantly I bring indoors to...

    Lead based paint

Thanks for the replies. Yes I have been searching other sites but most I have run across deal with houses or in the case of furniture not with the lead paint and i thought i would also check out the wisdom to be found here. Furniture refinishing is nothing new to me. Only the lead paint part is...

    Lead based paint

I need a little advice, please. My son has been given a dinning table that my Grandfather built and my father grew up eating off of. Because of its age we decided to get a test kit and unfortunately it tested positive. While the table isn't anything spectacular-it's just a basic plank table the...

What are you charging for eggs?

2.50 - 3.50 a dozen delivered. 2.50 to my husbands coworkers. 3.50 to patients of my chiropractor and the massage/nutritionist in the same building. For the most part those are people that are very into and willing to pay the extra that "health" food and organic costs. I generally the eggs pay...

    Apartment garden suggestions?

It sounds like you do not have a new place yet. If so make sure you list your priorities when you go looking. And one of those being the ability to grow plants. Balconies are great if they face the right way and the angle of the roof is such that enough sunlight gets in. Same with the windows...

What's your favorite pound cake recipe?

A pound of eggs is about a dozen small to medium eggs. Often pound cake recipies call for large eggs hence the < a dozen. The old time pound cake recipe was a pound of everything. But as on the "other thread" probably everything was in "abouts". FYI the american standards for egg size are...

How Do You Cook - Recipe or Wing It

I am a wing it person. Cook books and recipies = ideas and inspiration. Both ingrediants and amounts will change from one cooking to another on most things. Yes there are a few that need to be followed more closely and a very few that at least parts must be exact but in general close is just...

    removing screws from deck boards

Can you get to the joists underneath. If so can you get a sawsall blade in or a metal cutting blade of an ossolating tool between the deck board and the joists and cut the screws. This will not necessarily help remove the screws but will get the boards off. Also if they are already really...

    removing screws from deck boards

Both ideas so far are good. The vinegar may take a long time unless it is super strong. I've used the tool 2dream is talking about. Cannot remember what it is called either but it consists of a special drill bit to drill into the head then another bit which will fit into the hole drilled and...

CCA retaining wall and deck giving me nightmares!

If it were me I would wait for results of a soil test before doing anything. CCA treated wood for residential areas was phased out by 2003 with a few exceptions. That wall doesnt look very old so it may may not be except that those are large timbers and being a wall like they may have made the...

Would you mind sharing the brand, make, model and price. We have an attic fan and I will agree it definately helps but quiet - not a chance. We use ours winter and summer or really fall and spring . In the fall we turn it on when the temp outside is higher than the inside to help bring in the...

Just thought I'd share : Tattler lids is having a one day sale on their reusable canning lids through tomorrow night. 25-30% off. I can highly recommend them if you do a lot of canning. They are pricy in the short run but I have used some of mine 5 times now and they are still going strong...
