I plan on starting quail and turkey next year.
Right now we have chickens and meat rabbits (who have yet to produce any offspring :/ )
I also really want to start bees this coming year.
I really want to get a couple goats but think that may have to be put on hold until we can devote the time...
The female rabbit is injected with a woman's urine and after a while the rabbit is killed and cut open if the ovaries are swollen then there is a good chance the woman is pregnant. So either way the rabbit dies.
See I did learn something watching MASH reruns as a child!
Today is nice. Warm enough for short sleeves but gets into the 20s - 30s at night. We have had some early cold snaps and even snow in October! (Normally we don't see any until late December). Supposedly it will be a cold and wet Winter.
I know I'm a research-a-holic and since finally buying a house with land I have been going crazy trying to find the most logical natural self sufficient way of doing things.
I saw the plastic barrel idea and we have a friend who actually has one just lying around on his property so I may...
Thanks for posting this! We are planning on starting with bees this coming year and I had that book in my amazon wish list, I'll take it off now. I have The Backyard Bee Keeper which is a nice introduction.
What books would you recommend? I have been thinking of doing top bar hives.
We have...
I am hoping my New Zealands actually got pregnant this time. I've had them for so long with no production I'm beginning to think I have some outside pets that I spend alot of money on and look at. I can't wait to finally get some babies!
Oh nasty! :sick
I'm really glad that didn't happen this time! We have our own meat rabbits so once they start reproducing we shouldn't have any surprises with rabbit meat ......... I hope so anyway.
Just an update: The rabbit came out great! We had some friends over and they loved it. Of course Justin (aka the mighty hunter) was proud. I was just happy that I didn't ruin it. I'm glad I could get the much needed help on here!
Thanks again!
Edited to add: this was my first time eating...
Justin went out this morning on his first hunting trip (with a buddy who could show him the ropes) He shot and killed a buck Jack Rabbit at about 9am this morning. The boys dressed him out nicely and I put him in a tub of salt water at about 11:30am.
So if I leave him in there until 4pm and...
Tried the baking soda this morning I mixed 1/4 cup with a small amount of hot water and put it in the fabric softener spot. Pretty pleased with the results. Will try Vinegar next time.
Does anyone use baking soda in the rinse cycle?
I just started using homemade soap and have heard that baking soda is a natural softner and deodorizer when added to the rinse cycle. I imagine you would have to use hot water then....or no?
Very cool, I had no idea Ricki Lake did a documentary on birthing. I just finished "Who Killed the Electric Car" so I'll make that next on my list.
Wow I'll have to look up more on pitocin.
It never sat right with me why they were being so pushy with it, not that I'm knocking it completely...
Wow what a great idea! I am really bad about just throwing those bags away it's a bad habit of mine, I'll have to start saving them now.
I am currently knitting a bath mat made from strips of old torn blankets that someone was going to throw out.
So regarding Pitocin I didn't see it mentioned that it was used in the home birthing... is there any reason that they give it so much at the hospital? I have known 5 girls to give birth in the last year and all were given it from the beginning only one was a high risk pregnancy and the others...
We have a spinning guild just around the block from our house they let you use their wheel if no one else is. I would never have known about if I had not had a client mention it in passing, I then asked a local yarn store and they gave me all of the info. It is definitely fun to get associated...
Thank you for posting this I always wondered what actually would happen with a home birth since so many people seem to freak out about the thought. Bringing a child into the world is always a beautiful thing regardless of where it happens. Should we decide to have children I think I will look...
