The family ranch used to have a carbide tank. I had no idea that it was still around, I was given the impression that it was a done and gone thing. :)
I'm sure you have heard of Oxy/Acetylene welding and cutting. The gas that is produced by Calcium Carbide when mixed with water is acetylene. The world uses thousands of cubic feet of it every day. I wonder if the carbide tank you remember was used to generate acetylene for some purpose.

The carbide tank was located out in front of the house (under what's now a flower bed). Dad would tell us about filling it, and adding water every now and then.
Hmmmm. That's very interesting. I've never heard of that before. Maybe the carbide became too expensive. Was that here in the states?

Interesting. I'd never heard of it before...but I was raised a big city kid and moved out to the country to expire. Everything out here was/and still is new to me.
