My goodness. I have been reading and trying to catch up and have totally ignored my journal.
Not that is much to post. Totally gave up on taters. My last bag did not make - NOTHING. Oh well there is always next year. My tomatos area also all played out. But thats a good thing because its time to plant again.
We tilled everything in the little garden under this past weekend - needs one more (maybe two) tillings and then time to plant fall tomatos, turnips and going to try sugar snaps again. Got my bok choy seed out ready to go too.
Got a major score coming this weekend. My SIL (whom is crazy as a loon) decided she wanted chickens when I got mine. However, not just any chickens. She wanted sultans. Got 3 - 2 died. (which does not surprise me - what surprised me was that 1 lived). Anyway. She had this 1 chicken a 300.00 Chicken Tractor built. Took 4 grown men to put it on her back deck. (Yes I said her back deck). Anyway, as usual she grew tired of the chicken and found it a home. Now I get the chicken tractor. DH and stepson (along with some of stepsons strong backed friends are going to pick it up for me next Saturday.

I wish my relatives would consider me when they get tired of a hobby. Weird, your tomatoes are played out, mine have barely gotten started. I have one, single, solitary orange tomato that is thinking about getting ripe, the rest are still green.

Its a chicken coop on wheels that you can roll around - however this thing she is giving me is to big to roll around even if it is on wheels. I would have to push it with the people tractor. LOLLdychef2k said:

Noobie - I don't know whats up with my garden this year. My bell peppers did not make at all but my other peppers are still doing great. I always have great luck with bells

Looks like its been a minute or two since I posted to my journal.
Got my chicken tractor - forgot to take pics and post but will do that hopefully this week.
Today has been a humdinger. Processed 8 chickens (including 1 tough old rooster), and 6 rabbits. Had tough old rooster chicken and dumplins for dinner tonight. Not bad but boy was he stringy.
Canned 3 jars of chicken and 1 jar of rabbit. The rest went into the freezer. Took all the backs and ribs and boiled them up for chicken broth. Still have to can that but its already almost 8:30 at night and I have been working my little fingers to the bone since about 7 this morning. So chicken broth will go into the fridge and get canned tomorrow night after work.

2D, you and I seem to be up to the same activities lately....getting rid of an unproductive garden and processing culls. That's one of the signs of fall to me also....the first step to cleaning up the summer chores and getting on with the fall ones.

Yep Bee, my feed bill just dropped drastically.
I still have about 10 to 12 more birds to process. Not that these are unproductive it just that I am reducing my flock. The ones that went today were the ones that HAD TO GO NOW. The rest will just be at my leisure for flock reduction. I only need a few eggs a day, not the 18 a day I have been getting LOL. I can't sell or give them away fast enough.
I did find a man right around the corner from me who raises New Zealand White rabbits. I talked to him yesterday and told him I wanted 1 male and 2 females. But the longer we talked the more I am inclined to just purchase dressed rabbits from him. He does have some really good looking breeders and a wonderfully clean facility. He sells his breeders for 20 dollars a head and he sells dressed out rabbits for $11.00 each. If I count my time feeding and cleaning the rabbit area, going to the co-op 2x's a month to buy feed plus having to spend my time processing I can just skip straight to canning and eating for about the same cost by letting him do all the work. LOL Besides - its almost winter time and gonna be dark, cold and wet outside when I get home from work.

I have a girl who used to be in my 4-H group who raises meat rabbits and fancy pet rabbits. She will sell me beautiful fat fryers for $6.00 and cull rabbits for $5.00. I have to process my own, but that is no problem and I know how clean the processing was. You just can't beat the time and energy that you save! Especially when you know the rabbits are being fed good alfalfa hay and high quality feed while they are growing.
