Being a Canadian,Ontario specifically, all I can say is wow. I do realize that in a round about way we do end up paying for our health care, but....... if anyone here was to get breast cancer and got treated successfuly, it would cost them NOTHING. Yay Canucks.
I have a friend in Alberta and she says the system sucks,,she says most times a person cannot get the help they need fast enough so by the time they do get treatment its to late..I dont know, thats just what she tells me.
I do knowthat Alberta is different\than Ontario, but.... I can't complain on most things. when I have needed to get into a specialist, I haven't had any problems or long wait times. However, my dad has beenwaiting for his gall bladder surgery that had been postponed. He shoud have it on Sept 7,and he was put on the list in May. I still do believe that prevenatatgive meassures should be taken if you can do it. Regardless what country you live in. Itis only in your best interest.

I agree that preventative measures are important; that is why I eat organic and avoid processed food. But sometimes the causes are environmental or unknown. In any event, it is very sad when the financial strain is on top of the physical struggle. It's sad all around.

I can't imagine how awful it would be to have to decide whether to go to a doctor or not, and whether you could afford it or not... the stress of worrying about leaving your family with that type of debt would be crushing (at least to me).

My father had a quadruple bypass one year ago, and just spent a month in the hospital with septicemia... out of pocket costs: $300 worth of hospital parking passes for my mom to visit him everyday. He's retired now, and low income so the government also covers most of his prescription costs.

Wait times can get a little ridiculous here in New Brunswick though... I had to have biopsies done on some weird moles, I waited a little over a year to get in to see the specialist. My father now has polyps in his colon (his mother died of colon cancer) and he will be able to get it removed sometime in 2013.

FarmerChick glad your friend is doing good.

I am 10 yr survivor on Breast Cancer and 8 yr on Uterine Cancer. It is unreal the cost of cancer. Did Breast Cancer with no insurance had help with second cancer. We could go to Mexico and get a yrs worth of meds for what it cost for one months supply in the states.

Have a friend with brain cancer owns a wrecker company, makes to much for help from Medicad and not enough to afford insurance. So she is basically dieing while they fight over who is going to help out. No I am sorry not fighting insurance says get Medicad, Medicad says get insurance. She has had to stop driving her wrecker and had to hire someone to drive for her. Now the company is about to be upside down and she is still getting the run around from Medicad. It is a very sad thing to watch, I am sure others go thru this same thing all over the country but it is sooo wrong in so many ways
