A Little Backyard Homestead Project

Looks to be a large area to have available! :celebrate

Gardens mean canning. Hmmm. you will be too busy to get into any trouble for awhile :p Do you have any things available to help...tiller, mower, etc.? Sure hope so.

Now that we have seen the yard....how's the house? Larger than before? Sounds like you will be there for a while & that you are excited. Congrats!

@sumi i'm so happy for you. finding a place you will have room to work with and make it the way you want. can't wait to see pictures as you progress.

Oh there is always time for trouble! ;) No tiller or mower, just some hand tools and I need more... I think time and energy should take care of most of the work.

The house is lovely, not big, but bigger than I had before. Entrance hall, smallish but adequate lounge/sitting room with the kitchen leading off that. The kitchen is a good size, with an eating area off to the side and stairs leading up to the bedrooms (3 good sized) and bathroom. The house is well laid out to make use of the space and should be easy to heat over winter, with the wood burner in the lounge. There is storage heating available too, but I'm going to avoid using that as much as possible, as it's running on electricity and probably dang expensive.

Finally had some time and energy today to get started. This only took me about 90 minutes, but it was heavy enough work and mostly done by hand as I kept finding more and more stones buried. I dug out quite a lot of stones and a bit of building rubble (which I moved to the back of the property, along with most of the moss). I plan to dig this patch over later and put some roses in here. Before and after:

The stone wall was about half this height when I got going. I actually enjoyed restacking it, but time will tell how secure it is lol There are still some stones left to remove, but I found the soil below and got to get an idea of how good/bad the situation is here.

Feels good, doesn't it??:weee

I bet getting that done makes you feel much more ready to tackle the next spot. It looks good! Love the stone wall!

It feels great :) I'm not entirely happy with the spot yet, but I'm taking a break from there and sawing logs for firewood now, before I get started on dinner. There are two piles of branches that needs clearing out there as well and some decent sized logs to be had from them, so step 2 is underway… Slowly but surely.

I looked for a rake this afternoon to start gathering up and clearing the dead grass, but the price of the one I found stopped me. I think I'm going to look around a bit more before handing over any money.

I'm hoping tomorrow weather's will be this nice again, so I can continue working outside.

Nice job. Looks like you get a "free gym membership" with the rental  Personally, I like a day when I have worked & accomplished something. Healthy for you all around.

My arms and shoulders agree with that statement! They were telling me about it this evening, but I feel good and look forward to more work out there, now I got started.
