I'm building some of my supers, and I can't make inset handles, so I was thinking about using external handles, and was wondering if that would create problems, or what.

I really don't see why it would present a problem. Someone who moved hives for pollination purposes wouldn't want them (they'd get knocked off loading or unloading from the truck, etc), but for home use I can't think of a good reason why you can't use external handles.

Hubby happens to be sitting nearby building some supers so I asked him. He said the only thing is to make sure the handles are secure, and won't pull out or break off when thee wood on the super gets older, drier, etc. If you are going to use screws, inset the nuts on the inside of the super - you won't ever see them again once the bees propolize everything, and you don't want a lot of hardware on the inside to interfer with bee space.
