I worry much less about electricity now that we have solar. But we have replaced all our appliances with energy star, and all our lightbulbs are either CFLs or LEDs.

It's a homebrewer's trick. If you are interested, look up "kegerator" or "lagering".

It works like this: the thermostat is just a box with two ended cord, one male end and one female end. It also has a metal probe. You plug your freezer into the female end, then plug the male thermostat cord into the wall outlet. Run the probe through space along the back, where the hinged lid is attached. Duct tape the probe to the back wall of the freezer. Adjust the thermostat down to refrigerator temperature- about 40 degrees F. You now have a chest fridge.

This is the model we use.

Oh, OK. It is the way you make a freezer into a 'frige. Pretty slick. Thanks.
I wondered how you found a chest-type 'frige as I have never seen one other than in the stores.
