I think it is wrong to judge people whether they love chickens and compost or cell phones and shiny gadgets. We all have a right to what makes us happy and we have no right to denigrate anyone else's preferences. Additionally, I think there are some people who just enjoy being miserable whether they are rich or poor. I don't get it, but it is none of my business.

So now I look "poor" to some because I've changed many of my spending habits. Whatever.

I think that is it Becca. Everyone's spending habits 'kinda' do make one look rich, poor or whatever thru life. I changed my habits also. I guess I look poor too :/ but I also think this comes under the 'who cares how I look' to others how I choose to spend my money...lol

so moral of this all is----if someone says you need help cause ya look poor (first see what they are offering, cause heck ya might want it anyway ) or tell them to F off

The way someone looks should NEVER be an indicator of how wealthy they are. Never. I'm sorry. The people that are always dressed to the nines are usually the most in debt. I've seen and know many very wealthy people who don't spend too much time on their looks. (I also know quite a few blokes that dress great and are in a mountain of debt.)

One example is my best friend's husband, he is worth well over 10 million. He made his fortune in concrete and dressed the part everyday. Dusty plaid shrits and blue jeans. He wears old clothes and holey shoes to the gym. One day a gym buddy of his told him that he should ask his boss (um, he is his own boss) to at least help him get a new pair of shoes. He also drove the ugliest work truck in town. His kids wouldn't be caught dead in it. He had two houses, one in a very wealthy part of Houston and one out in the hill country with 300 acres attached. He pays for everything in cash too, no debt.

I agree but alot of times it is an 'assumed' indicator...hence when ya dress poorly and seem poorly for whatever reason a different person might think you are poorly---they might offer help and like I said before---if it is good help, take it or tell them to take a hike LOL

yup, no tellin' on looks or a home or whatever what a person has in the bank.

Interesting thread. We are not poor- we are a 2 income family, our house is almost paid off, and we can afford all our bills on a regular basis (even the property tax bill that is horrendous! We are going to have to live someplace with cheaper prop taxes if/when we finally decide to stop working). Having money coming in on a regular basis is a luxury in itself. But I make my choices to invest that money in SS things- my dehydrator, my pasta roller, my chickens, my garden, I'd like a new wood stove (or find someone up here who will refurbish our old one- which I do like, but has a cracked fireback and a stuck door handle.) I also need fewer horses They are the biggest reason I work! But they are a choice I have made, and just the horses make us look like we are rich A lot of people can't understand that we don't really want to go on vacations, that we invested in a snowplow for the truck to plow ourselves out, that we make our own soap and laundry detergent, I eat my own yogurt, and on and on. Because we could afford to hire someone to plow, buy soap and "stuff" but we don't want to.

I don't think you can assume anything about how people are dressed. I often dress "to the nines" and get many compliments on my clothes. Some I have actually made myself; some I have had for decades; and nothing was purchased at full price. I have gotten finds on ebay and discount racks- expensive, well made, stylish clothes on the cheap. I am not in debt. It's just wrong to assume that well dressed people are in debt and casually dressed people are poor.

I think you can. When some kid with his hat on backwards walks by with his pants sagging and his underwear hanging out, you an assume he isn't seriously looking for a job and exercises poor judgement.

Some I have actually made myself; some I have had for decades; and nothing was purchased at full price. It's just wrong to assume that well dressed people are in debt and casually dressed people are poor.

No kidding! I have rarely had much, but I have at times worn almost new clothing from Sacs 5th Avenue and Banana Republic. Who's to know that I did not pay full price?

My daughter's boyfriend wears baggy pants and wears his cap backwards. He also works two jobs and loves his family. And, he loves me and is funny and fun to be with. It's sad that some people would dismiss him because of his clothes. People are just shallow.
