So, to get to the basics of this journal. :p

I started focusing my attention to health and home about 4 years ago after my step-dad died of heart disease and my mom was having issues with her own heart and diabetes. I went to a chiropractic clinic where I learned a lot about natural health and taking control of our bodies. I've gained some weight back that I lost during that time, but I still long to do better at controlling my health through natural food choices. But I do get so busy and tired that I lax.

My homestead is about 2 acres in the country, though along a well-traveled road. I'm surrounded by lots of relatively unused but mowed farmland. I grew up here and never really wanted to leave. I bought the house from my parents.

I'm into making my own:
laundry detergent
cleaners
baskets
bread
canned goods (including salsa, pasta sauce, jelly, apple butter, etc.)
cheese (only once so far)
rainwater collection

I'm working on expanding my:
vegetable garden (though we've always done a fairly large one)
orchard (only 2 apple trees and wild blackberries now, but bought grapes and blueberries this year)
attempts at foraging for wild edibles
laying flock of chickens
knowledge of home health remedies

I want to eventually:
have a clothesline (haven't had one up in at least 3 years, but I did buy an umbrella kind to set up)
make homemade yogurt
make sauerkraut
try the no shampoo recipe thing :)
have an asparagus patch
raise a flock of meat birds and butcher them (done!)
go Morel hunting (tried once without a guide and found none)
find a supplier for raw milk (cow and/or goat)
take a class in growing and using herbs
breed some poultry for selling eggs or chicks
tap maple trees

Well, that should get this started.

God bless you if you care to follow along. :frow

The house pets.

Okay, I see I need to explain "Morning Gem" farm.

You can see the "My Page" link to my BYC page that explains this with pictures of my chickens. But back in the 50s my grandpa operated a big egg business on the farm (portion my cousin still owns). He called the egg farm Morning Gem, so I've chosen to adopt that and continue some of that legacy. Don't know if it will go on any sign yet. So far the label on my egg boxes says "Becky's Backyard Eggs."

So that's that. :)

Isn't it interesting how sometimes we adopt what our ancestors drop. My great-grndparents used to have a farm in Ontario. The only person interested in farming in my entire maternal family is myself.

I love your pups. They look comfy and loving too.

Welcome! Hope you enjoy your time here!

I think your Embden with the gray is a Pilgrim though ;)

Well, we were at Meyers when she got them, and Meyers said they only have Embdens and Chinese for pickup, so it's supposed to be an Embden...hmmm

Well thats quite interesting..

Either she got a crossbred (Embden & brown Chinese, although it doesn't look like it would be from the size) or it is a Pilgrim. A gander Pilgrim at that, they are autosex, females gray with slight white markings on the head, and males are white with gray, just like the one in her picture.

One of each is great if you ask me, unless you were going to breed. Both are good breeds.

How lucky to have family land, even if you are just the second generation.

Those look like some fierce guardian dogs you got there! :)
