I admit that I, too, have tolerated a bad roo. I kick his tush every day to remind him who is boss, but I can't let visitors in with him, and dh won't go into the pen without a big stick. I figure if the coyotes breach my fence, they will get a face-full of George, and then full stomachs.

He made a move towards my baby goat last week, though, and had he made contact, I would've ripped his head off with my bare hands! The intensity of that knowledge startled me!

Aly, I wouldn't do it if he weren't tearing up the girls so badly. I swore I'd never have worn-backed hens on my place....it looks so bad and they look so uncomfortable! Ol' Sue never tore up any hens and neither does Toby....just big, beautiful Sweet Lou. I would rehome him for a price, but noone buys roosters around here. So, the only logical solution is to cull for our own consumption.

I'm pretty logical, so the path is clear......

There are so many sweet and normal roos out there in the world which you all could be feeding and keeping care of....why would you give coop space to a tyrant? Just curious......

Cut all the boys' hair today and it feels good to have that little chore over! Each boy likes a different style and I do pretty good with it. Saves us some money, to be sure, as their hair grows very quickly!

My mom always cut her own kid's hair all these years and I still don't let anyone but my mom cut my hair....I've done this a few times at a salon and left the place crying! They never cut it the way you want it....they cut it the way they want it!

I don't know what I will do when my mother is no longer available for hair cutting...maybe attempt to do it myself.

Anybody else do their own hair cutting for the family?

Good morning, I wish I lived closer. I would love to come for the culling tutorial. I have a couple really old hens that need to go. I just don't know how.

I cut my sons hair. And DH as well when I can get a hold of him. DS is only 8 and has had buzz cuts since he was two. He refuses to have any hair. Just hates it. I need to trim my girls hair. Not sure about how to make it straight. I guess I should try and if it doesn't work out have someone else fix it.

Do you know anyone else who cuts hair? Maybe they could watch how your mom cuts yours. Then take over the job. I don't think I could cut my own hair. My mom used to cut her own. She kept it really short and trimmed up in the back. Always looked good to me.

My boys always had buzz cuts while growing up....and, man, did they look cute!!! But when the teens hit, there were the layered looks, the youngest wanted to grow a small mullet(I wouldn't allow the full-blown version) ~he loves everything redneck ~, the oldest now likes a high and tight~military style, and the middle likes a flat top with some length left in the front...sort of a fringe.

The youngest is now abandoning his fashion statement of The Mullet and is now moving towards just a "man" cut, short and sharp, of which I approve greatly!

Then there is the myriad facial hair changes...the oldest does the goatee, the middle likes a neatly trimmed and short beard, the youngest is just getting in his spotty growth and consented to a good, neat trim to suit his new hairstyling. I find it all highly amusing and love the way they all have their own "thing" that they like.

I've never allowed any long hair or any extreme "hair statements" like long or unruly hair, no hair coloring of any kind, and no mohawks. Yeah, its their hair, but they represent our family, so I get to have a say in the style until they get a family of their own! Besides.....I do the hair cutting!

Well, Bee, I understand not keeping a tyrant roo. Thankfully I don't have any tyrants of yet, but once I do, they be gone. My mom had 2 terrible roos, would attack anyone. They flew at me once and I nearly lost my cool. Mom was laughing. I let her know those two beasts would be stewed if they were at my house!

I told my sis the same thing! She has to walk around her place with an old buggy whip for protection. Problem is, she never actually uses the buggy whip, therefore its merely to stave them off at a distance, sort of like the chair keeping away the lions!

She just dies when I talk about killing my chickens....she kills nothing at her place~even when it would be humane to end the suffering~and states she "just can't". I've offered to help her with animals that need this type of dispatching, but she always refuses.

At least my animals don't need to suffer. Good, clean, happy life~quick, painless death and for a good purpose. Food and the continued living of another creature. <insert the song, "The Circle of Life" by EJ, here>

As I type this, my broody is becoming a mom!! I'm a grandhen!! I have a little black chick, one gray, one crack and a pip....and two with no signs of breakage yet!




My very first batch of chicks hatched the old-fashioned way! What a miracle it all is..... this design of God's. The renewal of life, the baby in a perfect, hard-shelled package. The utter perfection of their little bodies....all fluffy and cute!

God is good!!!

ETA: This is how I wanted it. When its time to cull nonproducers, a new batch of replacement birds are coming in the door. I'm hoping they are all hens! I know, I know...too much to ask, huh?

Ha, ha, Aly! I took another look and they both are dark~black with grey under, yellow spots here and there. I have no idea, since they will be a mutt mixture of my roos and hens. I'm still hoping the rest hatch alright.
