best dehydrator

I got this one.

The newer model has 11 trays and was twice as much.

I did read a review about which dehydrator to choose that said to not bother about getting one with an auto shut off. His claim was that you cannot over dry anything.

Been real happy with my 9 tray Excaliber for years. It also works very nicely as a defroster- way better than using a microwave

I have big one from Cabelas I bought a decade ago. I have a little round Presto that works awesome for herb drying.

I don't actually dry a lot.


This sucker holds 30 pounds of apples and is a workhorse. I need to get a new piece of plexiglass for it and Mom says I can have it.

Excalibur here too. I don't use it very often, but the results are always well received when I do.

While I think I'd love an expensive Excalibur, I use my little round Presto happily. $8 at a habitat store. If I graduate to way more dehydrating, i'll go for bigger/better. Amount of use for the money controls my standard buys.

That said, I have excellent, top of line, cream separator and cheese press, and canner that were ALL purchased on Craigslist ads from person's not using. Canner brand new, milk/cheese items gently used! All at way, way below cost & value! Takes patience. I have about $225 invested in over $800 worth of items.

So consider options that may be available. Many people get started and then stop. If it's not on the back of a shelf, they sometimes sell and move along.

Mom and my Great Aunt both have one of those Excaliburs bought back in the late 70s. Used a ton amd they still work well. Nice workhorses. Especially for items 40+ years old.

If I was buying new, I would not get a round one because its hard to get small things off the trays without them falling through the center hole.

I bought some of the solid round trays to put in my Excalibur when I am drying liquids (like fruit puree) or very small items because the Excalibur comes with mesh trays.
