I have a dear elderly friend that gives me shelled black walnuts often. We've been friends for 35 years, guess she forgot that I can't stand 'em. So I smile, tell her thanks and give her a couple dozen eggs.

This jar is labeled 12/2010, so they've been in her freezer a couple years. DS#1 said they didn't taste good, so it sounds like they're rancid. I was going to throw them out to the compost, chicken run, anywhere outside, but somewhere I remember reading that black walnuts are not good for chickens and peafowl. I have both and don't want to poison them. I don't feed my hens moldy food, but when they free range, they have access to the composting area. Same with the peacock.

Anyone know for sure?

I've never heard of the nuts being toxic. The black junk from the shells can be toxic, but not the nut. :hu I heard you can kill a pond full of fish with them just by tossing them in the water when they're green. Easy way to clean out a pond :p
