Pretty good soil, the sub-soil has a lot of sand with small clay lenses so I have great drainage.
But, I also have a lot of weed seeds built up in the soil and ALOT of crab grass to get rid of. After 2 years, I think I am finally starting to get the upper hand.

I would take it as a blessing of the garden area from Mother Nature or a nod of approval from a previous homesteader.

Carrots and spinach are just starting to pop up . No sign of peas yet, I suspect soon though. Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels are showing new growth. Now that I installed chicken wire around the perimeter, to keep the rabbits out.

You're a lot braver than me! I"m behind about two weeks on my plants. The broccoli and cabbage are just now sprouting. I like to wait a little longer I guess.

Just crazy is all... Who do you know who sets out hardy non-hardened off transplants when there is still snow on the ground? Only me... well my high stakes gamble paid off, rabbits and all sometimes you win, other times you loose.

Weather outlook is good. Need to fertilize by Thursday though, at least the onions.

I'll be starting my peppers and tomatoes inside this weekend, probably Saturday since they are calling for storms. Its something to do inside on a rainny day.

April 14 - like every southern IL spring, its wet, wet, wet... In order to avoid flooding out my seedlings, I have to hill up rows and create trenches to drain off excess rain fall.

Long view looking south

Looking west - direct sowed left to right, kale, romaine lettuce, 2 rows beets & 2 rows spinach.

2 rows each (transplants) Brussels, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli

2 rows onion transplants & 2 rows carrots direct sow.

Need to get in there and thin out the direct sows, fertilize, cultivate the weeds in between the rows and lay down some straw. I'll get to all that, once it dries out enough to get in there.

That's standard practice here... we couldn't garden if we didn't!

Thanks... Yeah it's starting to look much better now that i'm able to keep those munching rabbits out of the garden.

Assuming i can get in there soon and work it a little, we should be eating our first spinach and romaine lettuce in about 3 weeks or so. Spinach is just starting to get its second leaf. I guess my plant when there is still snow on the ground gamble paid off this year. Although I've lost that bet many years before.

I hear you! Dig the trenches deep and build the rows up high. Some years I can remember having to double dig the trenches and widen the hills. Hope this isn't one of those years. I'm an old school gardener, give me my rototiller, hoe and rake and I'm good to go.
