Chicks are hatching :)

I'm so glad it's too cold here for raising chicks-except in the house which I don't like doing. Otherwise, I'd be wanting to break out the incubator and hatch some more chicks!

#10 hatched a few minutes ago and #11 is chattering away in the egg :)

I had to set up a brooder in the bathroom for them. Our flat is so small. It is getting rather hot here now, so I think they'll be outside in a month tops.

i can't believe they have hatched so well with the incubator problems you had. so tickled for you. I'm with denimdeb, glad its to cold to raise babies except in the house or i would be poking eggs in the incubator too. there is something addictive about it.

I have another broody. Actually the one I broke, laid a few eggs and promptly went broody again, this time in the coop. I shoved a few eggs under her and found my little banty hen beat me to it :rolleyes:So in about 2 weeks' time I'm going to have to start checking for an early bird and remove it while mom finishes up/

I forgot to update. She hatched 7 chicks:

White hen went broody again and is sitting on 6 eggs and surprise, surprise, my rescued bantam hen went broody (psycho) for the first time. That thing lost her mind!? I went and marked her eggs today and she pecked me so hard, I have a small bruise on my hand. Fun times ahead with that one LOL

I wore a pair of leather gloves and a denim jacket when I had to mess w/my one broody. Otherwise, I'd get pecked! And, once her chicks hatched, she was very protective of them.

I second wearing gloves. I have a silkie pullet (who hasn't laid me an egg yet) who's decided to go broody. She's vicious. Even with the gloves on it hurt a bit.

That is a great picture of the hen with her chicks, sumi.

congrats on the new peeps. 7 total? ds has a maran hen who went broody and hatched 5 little blue babies in her barn. her lgd made the mistake of going into the stall the hen's nest was in. you have never seen a giant dog run so hard from a little blue hen in all your life. we laughed and laughed at the poor pup. 2 months later and he still walks wide circles around mama hen. lesson well learned.
