hey I was thinking about your rabbits over chickens. If my memory is not muddled I think it was Morel who had rabbits like that. At her old lake house. It was not a hoop house but the cages were up high off the side of a shed like structure. You should ask her.

So, it's been several days so I figured I would post a general update

Everyone here is fine.

Yay, that was short!

But seriously, we had the crud everyone else on here is whining about this time last month so we are good there. We did lose one Silver Spangled Hamburg chick a couple days ago, but that was I believe from a combination of the whole drowning experience and the fact that noone feels good when their bum is totally plugged! I checked the rest as best I could considering they kept running to the opposite side of the brooder, but I didn't see any poopy butts while everyone was running around, so it's all good there

I was going to ask Wifezilla yesterday how she got her ducklings to drink from the rabbit waterer, cause I was afraid mine are just retarded but when I got home last night and checked on them three of them were fighting over the water bottle, and this morning it was mostly empty so They aren't retarded, just slow witted

I do have a couple questions, and yes I will also post these in the appropriate areas elsewhere
1. This concerns beans. so, for those of you who eat "mexican" they sell beans in a can. You generally use said beans in tacos, burritos, or what have you. How can I make this product from scratch using dried beans? To be honest, I'd druther try this than buy the canned stuff, it just seems it would be healthier, more SS, and probably taste better. Plus, I found a bulk store that sells them by the pound and I think it's cheaper than buying the packaged dried beans!

2. Anyone have experience ripping out carpet and putting in a wood floor? We are thinking of doing this, and using bamboo or cork, or maybe both. We live in a trailer though, so how feasable would this actually be? I'm tired of this stupid laminate stuff in the kitchen bathroom and part of the hallway, and the carpet elsewhere. But, it'd also have to stand up to foot traffic from humans, dogs and cats and I suppose the occasional chicken

I made up a business card for us! Right now it just a couple pics of chickens on the front, and eggs prices on the back with a little info about us, but it's a start!

Anyone have experience ripping out carpet and putting in a wood floor?

Yes Ripping out the carpet was the best thing we ever did.

As for what kind of floor to replace it with, we used a wood laminate. Not my choice though. Hubby found a bunch really cheap and bought it before I could say anything. It was a great deal, but we already have some areas where the floor needs to be replaced. It isn't necessarily a problem with the laminate, it is a problem with an incontinent, senile, 21 year old cat who refuses to use the litter box or go outside

Anyway, I would try to find something that is very tolerant to water. I am always spilling something, water gets tracked through the house from Max taking a shower, the cat is always peeing on it, etc... Even if you have to do one room at a time and pay extra, make sure it will stand up to whatever disasters you can see you, CJ or the animals creating.

Even with the Cookie issues, I am so glad we got rid of that carpet. i will NEVER EVER have carpet again.

I agree, ripping out the carpet was totally the best thing we ever did. We got laminate but I am home all day long and if I'm not the animals are confined to the porch. I love it but it does show spots some. I clean it with vinegar and water. I would have loved to do wood but I have a lab and even he will scratch the wood floors but the laminate seems to be holding up real well.

We pulled out the carpet and put down bamboo hardwood in our living room. Actually a couple years ago we got a whole bunch of bamboo hardwood cheap and just finally got around to installing it. We are going to do all the bedrooms too. We have all the flooring, just need time.

Especially if you do the click and lock stuff, it really isn't bad to put down. DH started gluing down the hardwood in the living room and it just wasn't going well. He got a nail gun and had the floor done in a couple of days. Nothing is ever easy when you do it for the first time but once you get the hang of it, it goes well.

Just a quick word about glue...if you use it, it WILL ooze out at some point. Hubby was told NO GLUE and actually followed that order

Last time he and a friend used glue, I was scraping glue out of the cracks for YEARS!!!

I'll try question #2 first. I agree with Wifey carpet stinks! We have hardwood here and it is the bomb. Now I want to suggest you install REAL hardwood instead of the laminate stuff. I had several sections of hardwood that needed to be replaced (since we removed a wall or two) and I found out that the local Habitat for Humanity Re-Store was a great source of real hardwood flooring at about the same cost as laminate! When they deconstruct old homes they often have a whole house worth of matching hardwood flooring for sale. This stuff is already stained and sealed, but could be sanded and refinished quite easily. Laying the stuff is almost as easy as laying laminate - except it is nailed down. It will add value to the home as well since laminate is usually rated for about 5 to 7 years and hardwood is rated to last about 50 years or more.

As far as question #1 goes - I cook up HUGE pots of beans, sometimes seasoned, on slow days at home. Then I package them in 2 cup servings in Ziplock bags, label and freeze. Then they are ready for any bean recipe I choose, fast and less that half the cost of canned beans!
