So Mama's planning on lasagna tomorrow for lunch for the family crowd. As she's looking over the recipe to determine what needs to be bought, she mentions tomatoes. "You can use some of the tomato sauce I canned," I remind her. "Are you sure?" she replies. "I know the point of putting the food up is to have it to use later, but I always hate doing that."
"Yes, Mama, use the tomato sauce, that's why I made it."
"OK, I guess that is one less thing to buy at the store."

*sigh*

It was hard for me to break into that first jar after I started canning. I mean, 2 seconds to break it open and throw it in the pot after all the labor in preparing it. But then I tasted it!!! Not hard to open those jars anymore!

Maybe your mom was just being sensitive to all of the hard work she knows you put in. Sounds like she understands the value of the gift you are offering!

My mother saves her canned goods. Until they explode(store bought), or until they change color (home canned tomatoes, pickles, beets) or until whenever.....she also saves cereal, spag sauce, mayo, and jellied cranberry sauce. Years and years and years.... sigh.... :)

I stopped giving my mother canned goods because they would sit unused, forever! I never even got my jars back! What is it with mothers?

I got wise to my mom a few years back and started giving things to her with a stern warning.....you'd better use it! This started after I gave her two sets of nice flannel sheets and a year later spotted them, unopened, in a closet. She was "saving" them for.....who knows what for. "They're too nice to use. I'll wait until my other sheets wear out." Sheesh! They were living in Northern Maine at the time! I opened the packages and ran them through the wash so they would no longer look brand-new.

When I started canning, I brought them cases of jars of food. I told my mother that I was short on jars and needed all the jars back when I saw them again in two months. There was at least one month's worth of dinners in those jars. She enjoyed the "fast-food" month she had!

Moms! :p

What's funny is that she KNOWS it tastes better and is better for us - she used to do it too! (Well, she froze hers, but still....) And she had issues using what she'd prepared to use for later, too....
