Crazy Science??

I've heard rumors about it among the hunting crowd. Obviously most deer hunters don't like the idea. And I'm sure lots of "anti-chemical anything" folks will hate it. I wonder what the fools at PETA think.

DW and I volunteered one winter in the Everglades National Park and spent 5 months working with a group of scientists and college professors who were looking for Political Correct ways to eliminate the Burmese Python situation that is so problematic down there. One of the most successful methods to reduce the snake population was birth control chemicals.

The PETA folks watched from afar and made up lies about what was going on. They even got some press in Miami but their claims were proven to be incorrect. Some of those idiots wanted to stage a demonstration several times but they couldn't get their act together.

anyone seen this?

birth control for deer?
Yes, unfortunately. A city to the west of here sits on the eastern edge of the Cuyahoga Valley Park system and has a large problem with deer overpopulation. One of the "anti-culling" proponents has been pushing this (the city currently hires sharpshooters to thin the herd).

I don't want to start any arguments about thinning herds that move into urban areas. Regardless of how the situation was created, we now have to deal with it.

This birth control method could really get expensive. My head is spinning on how in the world the herd could be managed over time.

I heard about it years ago. People wanted to do it in some areas here, but the cost was prohibitive.

Susch while I point out that the deer has to be knocked down to get the vaccine, and at that point why not just "put them down" for good? On the other hand I see a huge market for the vaccine in the pet market, much cheaper and easier on the owner than a Nutering operation. That is one bit of government research that could a huge impact on the private sector!~gd

birth control for deer?
thats just stupid. i bet there are hungry people in that community that wish:

1. they could have a descent meal that includes meat
2. that someone would spend that money feeding them

wow.

Brilliant  Birth control rather then more hunting for meat on the table.

Now all I can picture is that TSHTF and do we have deer to hunt? No. They're all at abstinance meetings and taking birth control.

About six (I think) years ago the Michigan Agricultural Commission threatened to file a lawsuit against the DNR for mismanagement of the deer herd resulting in millions of dollars in lost revenue to Michigan farmers as a result of crop damage by deer. The following year the DNR changed the regulations allowing hunters to harvest up to 5 does per season. Obviously you must buy a tag for each one. Today anyone hunting on private property can literally take as many does as they want.
Much of the deer harvest each year is donated to the local missions. IMO much better and more effective method of herd control.
Many local preserves and sanctuaries open to hunters with special permits to cull the herd and many times the deer harvested must be donated.
