Our Frustrated Curmudgeon
Just a quick note that might need edited.
What day is it? We figured out it is Thursday.
We are in the midst of the big disaster area but our conditions are not as bad as Kentucky.
Tuesday did not go to work. Office was shut down. We had about 2 inches of wintry mix. That is a technical term for really nasty mix of rain, sleet, snow, and freezing rain.
Wee hours of the morning Wednesday. Lost power.
The county maintained road that the county does not maintain was impassable because of fallen trees and branches. I walked to the blacktop road and met my neighbor on the way back. He was about to start clearing the road. By the time I ate breakfast and worked on my driveway he and a friend had finished. I put chains on the little car and made it to the road and back.
Stayed warm with the woodburning stove and had candle light.
Tuesday evening more wintry mix fell from the sky with more snow. This resulted in more trees and branches falling.
Wednesday was no work again. Got the truck thawed out and put chains on it. Sometime Wednesday we lost water. Still no electricity. Emptied the refrigerator and put everything in ice chests in the garage. Temperature in the garage is less than 40 F.
Thursday was work but I didn't go in. More branches across the road. Melting ice for drinking, flushing, and the chickens.
We are borrowing a generator so we have a light bulb, computers, internet (important things) and have the two freezers plugged in to get real cold again. Things look OK in the freezers.
It doesn't look like we will get electricity any time soon. The line going to our house had fallen across the blacktop. It has been cut because it was lying on the road. With only two houses in need of electricity on that line it probably isn't real high priority.
So how were we not prepared?
No generator for extended periods of time without electricity.
No battery or hand crank radio. Have to get radio from the car.

Wow Dacs! I hope you are staying safe and warm! Yes, internet and computer are the most important things to run when there is a power outage!!! I guess a generator of your own is the next thing on your shopping list then??

I've been thinking about ya'll and wondering how you are doing with the storm. You guys East and North of us got it worse than we did here in Oklahoma. What you folks are going through reminds me of what we had here in Dec of 07. It was a bad storm. Take care out there Dac. Storms like this can be so deadly. I wonder how Maple is? Have you talked to her lately?

Been there...I loved it:>) The kids stayed hme for the week, the house had no "background noises" and we were toasty warm in front of the fire. Freezer meat can be moved to a shed if it is below freezing. We didn't have a generator either...melting water for the horse was the biggest problem...I think I melted water for her all day nonstop!
