At the risk of questioning BYC moderation, I'm going to say, I really don't think you're the one who got it killed.

I was rather curt with my reply. The poster has been spreading his beliefs on more than one hawk thread. I got a little bit fed up with it so I replied without a lot of serious thought. A thread lock was probably going to happen anyway.

I think you made a valid point! But then, from one thread killer to another, I guess I'm a little biased!

I personally feel that the hawks are gravitating to the cities because there are no redneck hillbillies with guns killing them there!

I would venture to say that bald eagles and hawks have very little chance of survival in these parts, as the mountain folk think they are nuisance birds that eat all the trout in ponds and streams. They fear the law very little and wouldn't hesitate to blast a protected species~especially on their own back forty.

I think they are sooooooo beautiful and I know this sounds a little weird~but I wouldn't mind sacrificing one of my less desirable chickens just to see a hawk or eagle in action!

I wonder who holds the record for the most locked threads???

That would be a hard one to figure. Who has participated in locked threads or who has started a thread that got locked.

It would be hard to determine who caused a thread to get locked because it is usually more than one person. I don't doubt that I have been a partial cause but I wouldn't claim sole credit for any.

I need to learn to but sometimes I am not successful.

In my "yard" (really above my yard and sometimes in the trees or on the ground) I have seen Red-tailed Hawks, Red-shouldered Hawks, Northern Harriers, and Bald Eagles. I lost a small chicken many years ago to a hawk, now my coop is covered but I still let my chickens range during the day when we are home. I have lots of song birds. I also have a degree in biology with more classes in wildlife subjects to include ornithology. Nothing I have observed in nature has gone against my classroom learning.

I know we have at least one red tailed hawk that patrols our area. My chicken's runs are covered and we cannot let them free range, unfortunately.

In the past 3 months, a hawk flew through my breezeway after a little bird. Another time, one was walking on the junipers around my gazebo under which he had chased a rabbit.

Both were a beautiful sight to see.

Dacs---I love hawks.
We have tons on the farm here. They are great mouse hunters (and whatever hunters)--LOL

hey if they get a chick every now and then I say what the heck for me. they see the opportunity and take it. AND it is so rare for them to get one of ours. We only lost 2 to a hawk. Not bad considering I have over 1000s running thru this farm over the years.

What does more damage is the possum, raccoons, etc. The ground roaming critters.

I let the hawks do their thing.

I watch a hawk in the pasture pouncing on a mouse over and over again.....wow he trashed that mouse! Good eating for him and I enjoyed the show! LOL

A hawk just got one of my chickens today. It's my own fault. Apparantly I didn't make sure everyone was in the coop last night, and PJ my blue silkie roo became a hawks breakfast. I guess the hawk has to eat, too, and I'm going to make sure I do a better head count when I shut everyone in at night!

This is the first time I've lost one to a hawk.

QA, sorry to hear about your loss to a hawk.

We have a number of various hawks here. It is pretty disconcerting to see 5 to 8 large Red Tails circling over the pastures where our flock is foraging. The farm fields around us are surrounded by woodlands, so we always see them flying around. That is why we have Titan out whenever the flock is out.

When the juvenile Sharp-Shinned hawk landed by some of our chicks hiding under a bush, I was mighty glad Titan was there to chase it away. The hawk was sitting less than 6 inches away from our youngest birds and was about the same size.

The closest I've been to a hawk since moving to the farm was on our first Thanksgiving, which was prior to getting chickens. We had a blizzard that day with whiteout conditions. An adult Cooper's Hawk was chasing a wild bird and crashed into one of the windows in our living room. It was stunned for quite a while, so we were able to observe it from inside. It looked like the wing span was about 3 feet.

We have a lot of hawks out here....hence the song lyrics in the song "Oklahoma!"

In the spring and the fall we usually have about 10-12 circling around about 8 or so properties out here. There are plenty in the summer also, but not as many.

So far we have seen Red Tailed Hawks, and Red Shouldered Hawks. I didn't know there was such a Hawk until I looked up and their was a pair of huge feather shoulders above me I had to go look him up.
