Broody wasn't broody after all. Just hogging the nest. I really wasn't ready for 16 more chickens.

My wife was at girls' camp for a week and she had someone watching out for our chickens. Well, the person didn't check for eggs real well and we have a hen on 16 eggs.

And then we hear:

Dac, your going to have to get a handle on your chicken ranch. Wife an kids gone, some foreigner watching the chickens, a broody hen, and then the same hen not broody. My, my, my how things start falling apart when your gone.

I have only had chickens for a few months, so we are not even getting eggs yet, but man, I think I would be sad to have 16 eggs waisted by a moody not so broody hen.

I guess the clutch of eggs were on the floor of the coop in a corner. The gentleman feeding our chickens is in his 70s or 80s so it's understandable that he didn't notice them.

One thing about animals is that they tie you down more than kids do.

Sixteen eggs sound like a waste when you aren't getting many eggs yet but when you get that many a day it's only one day's loss.

We've been over run with raccoons, not just a couple, a bunch.

Hey Dac,
I think you and Becca have the same raccoon problem. I think she's getting a gun. What is a natural predator for raccoons? I wonder why the balance is off.

do you have any construction happening near you? When the farm near us sold out and tons of homes went up, the coons and skunks and everything else moved onto our farm. Yea, lucky us....LOL

No construction, just lots of open land and forest.

Got home last night. I've worked in three states since May; California, Wyoming, and Idaho. I've seen all my kids and even freeloaded off some of them, payback. I've worked on three national forests, been to four (I think) national parks and monuments, and have traveled quite a few miles. I've spent way too many nights in motel rooms.

Now that I'm home I have a lot of catching up to do; mowing (b(r)ush hogging), fire wood cutting, and general maintenance.

We have two new kittens. Anyone want some cats?

Too much to do and think about so this is about all for now.
