I want this sandwich for dinner. We have bread stores and turkey farmers and pig farms. I think I am in luck.

I gave up sugar, bananas, pineapple, wheat, oats, rice, etc... years ago. Not for any local food movement, but because I don't handle sugars and starches well.

I do buy local food when I can get it and the price is reasonable, but no way in hell am I giving up dark chocolate, coffee, cinnamon, curry powder or sweet potatoes! :p
I was looking at a plant nursery and they said coffee can be grown indoors in terra cotta pots. Normally it would be zones 9-10.

Even in the good ol' days, they imported stuff like sugar and tea.

I think if you ate just plain locally, you're diet would be pretty boring. I for one, would have trouble without chocolate and my coffee!

My goal with local food is to:
grow plenty of healthy natural food
keep our food expenses low and have a reliable supply for our needs
keep money in local community when possible
avoid long distance shipping to help the environment
Grow some foods or "helpful plants" that aren't normally local. Tea, spice plants, etc.
Barter with friends that are not quite local if they have natural foods that I like and don't have a way to grow.

When I need to make an exception, try to :
Find sources closest to my region at least to limit shipping
support the local economy of my family or friends
Buy from growers or makers instead of mega-corporations.
