Hi sufficientself community,

Does anyone know of any good edible houseplants that would do okay with a moderate amount of light? I want to grow some in my bedroom, but it's got North-facing windows.

Thanks!

I used to grow eggplant indoors in a sunny window. I thought they made beautiful house plants. :) (Some herbs too.) You might need a grow lamp bulb, not sure...it wouldn't hurt.

BTW, welcome!

You could try to grow pansy's inside. the flowers are edible.

A lot of the traditional houseplants tend to not only be tropical plants but poisonous.

I can't think of anything edible that would do well on a North-facing windowsill. Most edible plants need at least 6 hours of full sun. Do you get that much, and for how many weeks? That would be the place to start....Then maybe something leafy would work well.

How about stevia and herbs? Not sure how much sun they need.

Aloe is a useful plant to have around. I don't think it grows fast enough for eating, but I keep one in the kitchen for when I burn myself. They DON'T like direct sun. They do just fine in the shade.

Daylilies can grow in shade and are edible. I've never seen them potted, but I bet they would be a nice big green indoor pot.

Herbs might work. Perhaps oregano? We get roughly 3 hours of sunlight during the growing season. We've got aloe in the bathroom and it's doing great; I think I'll try it, tortoise!
