I went out and propped the door open for the older hens,
this was last night when they finally [after I made them] came into the coop. they didnt want to due to the set up of the brooder and the chicks, they are not liking this at all.

BUT!
the chicks did fine, I saw everyone breathing, the temp was 79/80 and they were not piled on each other. This is good. This is how they were at ??11pm or what ever time it was I went out last night to check them.

I pray this day goes easy.
I have laundry that needs done and some lite housekeeping.

I bought a dz hatching eggs at auction yesterday, $7. RIRxMarans. So I'll set incubator, prob add some of own hens eggs & wonder why I'd ventured on that ordeal again, as I spend a couple months watching, then mothering chicks 😵‍💫. Already wondering

I hatched 20 mixed chicks a few months back. I gave 10 to the neighbors, sold 5 and kept 5. Don't know the sex breakdown on the 5 I sold but the 10 I gave to the neighbors turned out to be 9 pullets and 1 roo. The 5 I kept for myself - 4 roos and 1 pullet. Sigh.... never fails, lol!

I don't give them away that soon 😁 if at all.

My cream legbars are color sexed at hatch 👍 marans not, RIR not....so wait a couple weeks and wing feathering can help.

I bought 11 chicks 2 yr ago, have lost 3 old hens over past 6 mos & a few oldsters still here. So, I figure it's time to add back to the flock that's dwindling. 🤷 The old gals still lay but, only 2-3 times a week. That's ok. But gotta start now or no winter eggs. Plus next yr -- no new hens=no eggs.

It's life on the farm 😉. Plan ahead.

Well, I just did a thing. Hopefully it'll stop me from giving away pullets, lol. I've got RIR and Barred Rock eggs on the way. Crossing a red roo over barred hens is supposed to give you chicks that can be feather sexed
at hatching.
