I'm philosophically opposed to flavor enhancers or anything else that's a substitute for cooking and real food.

However, this article is pretty slanted. You might want to find another source to check its validity.

BTW, there are lots of cell lines used in research, and HEK293 is one of them. It was established long ago and any damage that was done (probably little, because I think it was made from extra stored embryos from an IVF clinic) many years ago. You may think that's terrible, but my point is that embryos are not currently being destroyed for research in the food-additive industry. Anyways, scientists keep and propagate many cell lines for research. Most of it is the kind of research people support---understanding that leads to the cure/treatment of human disease. For example, I know of one researcher who uses these cells to express a receptor that is part of the interface between nerves and muscles.
