Same here...late summer. I happen to have an abundance of applesauce I canned, plain. She loves it 😄 so, some of that can be used up. Plus leftover breads I make. No preservatives, so short life.

And...boiled a dz eggs & fed back to hens yesterday. Would never do with store prices but fresh here. Also let some milk clabber for hens and cats. When you grow it you can share it ☺️

You may remember that I volunteer at our small town food pantry. With the County's Main Food Bank warehouse cut of $900,000 in Fed funds, all the pantries are struggling. I stumbled across two gals (there is a 3rd gal too) who have hobby farms. They each have sheep, cows, pigs, chickens, ducks, rabbits. These three women have a yearly contract with Costco near us, to haul away, every day of the week, all their discarded produce.

I made a verbal agreement with the first gal that if she had any human edible food for the food bank, that I"d drive up to her (6 miles up hill), take anything she is willing to pass on to fd bank, and then also I would take all of her massive cardboard boxes to the transfer station. She jumped on it!!

The second gal heard and said Oh Yoo Hoo!! I can give you stuff if you also take away these produce boxes!!

Its been going well.

I do skim off some things that I want for us. A package of mushrooms, two bags of broccoli, melons, strawberries, lettuce, etc. I have been freezing many items, dehydrating alot of it, and tomorrow I'll make mango salsa to can.

I take the boxes of produce to the food bank. Much of it they reject cus they are not "perfect". I roll my eyes, but the food bank is the one that has to bear the wrath of the clients who feel entitled to "perfect" food. I skim that rejected produce too, and the rest comes home to my 3 pallet long compost bin.

Tuesday afternoon, the food bank accepted 481 lbs of food that was good enuf for our clients, that Costco was discarding. They've never in my 4 weeks of doing this, accepted this much!!

This and my deep pantry of canned goods has really helped us with our food budget. And oh how I wish I could share with each of you.

When produce is perfect, I become highly suspicious. I know first hand ( as some here do) what goes into growing and raising food stuff.

Unfortunately... you can ask all day long, what was used to grow this, but no one knows the answer except the preson who grew it. And the grower does not work at the grocery store.

I've said enough...

Hope you all have a blessed rest of your day.

@murphysranch I used to get damaged &/or close dated from a person who had a similar contract with a food distributor for restaurants. Got some awesome stuff!!! They sold co and new mgmt changed things.

Anyway -- yeah, I fed animals from the produces, canned/froze meats, veggies, all kinds of stuff!!! It was fantastic!

Went to a weekly produce auction tonight. Still early in season but ok selection. I wanted a bushel or so of tomatoes to can BUT not at $50-60. Plus there were some that were commercial type, picked under ripe, refrig stored, etc. Nope. No flavor there. I'll wait. Ahhh, decided nothing else I wanted, so left. Bulk corn was going about $3 a dz ears. Peppers were limited, it's a little early yet. Watermelon went high, too. But didn't need 50-75 of them 😳 sold in bulk. Blueberries went well, didn't need any.

It was fun to go 😁 although I was wondering why I was there. Maybe something next week.

No produce auctions here, never been to one. We have farmers markets, but not auctions. Farmers markets are geared towards small purchases, 3 tomatoes, 4 potatoes, a few of everything.

We have farmers markets like you. This is geared toward bulk sales. Bushel, half bushels, etc. some locals with big gardens bring smaller amounts. Anyone can sell/buy. Many buyers here are supplying their own market stalls in surrounding housing communities, say 50 miles out. The melons are brought in in those huge cardboard containers like you see in stores, on a pallet. Corn in bulk bags, etc. There were squash & cukes aplenty.

On flip side, there will be some flats of smaller quantities -- limas, dozens of eggs, 3-6 cantaloupes, vice the tubs of 100. A single flat of okra or jalapenos. You never know. 😁 I've gotten some good stuff.

ETA...basically, no garden here this yr. 😞 Life happens
