Eh, don't feel like housework of any kind today. My stove is broken and I am on strike. I can't do my canning project...need catfood before we go to Miami in Feb and I have only two opportunities to get it done....and one is passing me by! Arrgh!
So, the dinner today was planned as a joint effort...I would cook, and bring it over to the folk's apartment, where we would jointly entertain a guest. We hope to make this a once or twice a month...or more...habit. I cook, they clean before and after....great deal, as far as I'm concerned! I will cook for leftovers, so I won't have to cook for a couple of days, and Dad won't have to for longer.
I put two grass-fed sirloin roasts into the Dutch oven (over 9 lbs total) with onions, garlic, s&p, and a pint of turkey broth...browned the roasts first in plenty of bacon grease. Put it into my oven before leaving for our afternoon services. Went to shut off the veggies to finish cooking them later....that is when I noticed that there was no flame. And it was almost time to leave....YIKES! So I called my dad and told him to preheat the oven, come pick up dh, and leave his door unlocked...then I transported everything over there and showed up late for services...only 10 minutes, which was pretty heroic, I think.
I made rutabagas and carrots mashed together with butter, salt and goat's milk. We had collards cooked with home-salted pork fat. We had organic red potatoes cooked with the beef during the last half hour. We had a small pan of last night's mac-n-cheese with bacon on top.
They were drinking some wine when I showed up (had to get the animals here fed and pick up the last few items) and I'd brought three of last summer's liqueur's to try....Mom took a tiny taste of each, but no one wanted any....Mom was happy, and stashed them away for later. I told her she had to now let Dad make the beer kit we got him, and not worry about the smell and the neighbors....besides, the beer would keep him out of her melon (tastes like a warm melon, fresh from the August garden!), plum, and peach liqueurs! It worked. He's making the beer tomorrow.
We finished with oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and goat's milk.
Hence the burp.
