DH had a podiatrist appointment yesterday. We love his podiatrist - he and DH were obviously separated at birth, lol. They literally have the same thoughts in their head at the same time and talk and laugh in their own little world. It's almost scary, lol. Besides being a great person the guy is a great podiatrist. While he's talking and laughing it up with DH he's doing a very thorough foot exam. DH's feet are doing ok. He's advised us to think about getting an ultrasound of the arteries in his legs as a precaution.
Went out for lunch afterwards. It was ok - but shot DH's blood sugar into the stratosphere. I guess we didn't estimate the carbs correctly. Took all day to get it back down, but that's how it is these days.
I've been taking advantage of the cooler days we've had to try and get some much-needed weed whacking done. Our coolish weather will end today. Boo - I need months and months of it to get caught up on outside work.
I've lost two silkie pullets in two days. One was a poor doer from birth and had a bum leg. The other one was a surprise. Found her basically unresponsive without a mark on her. She was very thin. Hope there are no more losses - it shouldn't be this hard to raise some dumb chickens. I've tossed around the idea of getting the chickens gone and sticking with quail. Quail eggs are delicious - and so are the little birds. They stay in their cages (if the gates are shut, lol) and don't cause any problems at all. They start laying at about 6ish weeks and are ready to harvest for meat just a couple weeks beyond that. What's not to love? But, I've spent some dollars getting these silkies and I'm determined to get going with 'em. There's a huge demand for them in this area and they sell like hotcakes. However, they're taking forever to start laying. I've got one that's a bit over 7 months old and hasn't produced an egg yet. ARGH!
Gotta get outside before it starts warming up.

Does it crow?
I think they do take longer to POL. Chickens here are for bug control & eggs (that I rarely eat--just not a fan) so I want large breed with feathers & clean legs. Silkies are great moms! I just can't go with the fluff

It eats and poops, lol. No crowing! It has a crowing roommate that is convinced that she is actually a she. Mother Nature is taking her sweet time here...Does it crow?

Still no eggs from the silkie... But, I am getting more eggs than I was getting a few days ago. I replaced an open nest box with a closed one that has a smallish opening. Hens can get in - but my dogs can't, lol. They're not real happy that I'm getting the eggs that they've been stealing lately!
Debating on putting quail eggs in the incubator. I need more in the freezer - they're tasty. We've had a few losses among the layers as summer has gone on so I need to keep my egg numbers up too. When we have scrambled eggs for breakfast I use a minimum of 12-15 quail eggs. That's about what my daily haul is these days. Early in the summer I would get approximately 20ish.
So... DH fell again last night.
That's 3 times in about 4 weeks. This insanity has to stop. It dawned on me last night while helping him off the floor that he never falls when I'm with him. I have never seen him fall. Proof that if he would just LISTEN to me... 
I'm always telling him ' do this,' don't do that,' 'do it this way'. Anyway, small bruise/contusion on his back where he contacted the handle on the oven door. He'll probably be sore today, but no major damage.

Holy Cow! I guess all it took was the threat of chicken soup and that lazy pullet finally laid an egg! Whoop! She's a little over 7 months old. I was thrilled to see it, snatched it up and promptly dropped and broke it. Of course I did....sigh.
While feeding the fish at the pond yesterday I was able to see them better than I usually can. I was tossing pellets closer to shore and the sun was going down so there wasn't much of a glare on the water. Looks like there are some pretty big fish in there! I've only fished a couple of times lately and haven't used any live bait at all. Bluegill are plentiful and willing to bite which is nice. However, I'd like to hook a bass to check on their size. Grandson caught a nice one several months back. Some of the ones I saw feeding yesterday appeared to be quite large. YaY!
