if you have no pressure at all you have to figure out if your pump is shot or not, but once you know the pump is working and during really cold weather you do not want to turn off any flows you might have if they are in danger of freezing. it is much harder to get things unfrozen again if there is no flow at all.

if you do end up with a broken pipe then yes you want to shut things off if you can as you don't want to flood the house or cause other problems on the property, but if you can isolate the break and get that repaired ASAP before the plumbing freezes that is the best thing that can happen.

One of my does aborted a baby yesterday. No idea why. I found it with no movement except for a heartbeat and an occasional shallow breath. Poor baby was probably a month early. No teeth, barely any hair and eyes sealed shut. No hope and its mama really didn't seem to have a bond with it. I put her in a pen with the baby overnight in case she had anymore babies to be delivered. She was 100% ready to get out of that pen this morning and went on like nothing ever happened. So sad.

We got up to 60 degrees today! Should be a tad warmer tomorrow and then get cold again for the weekend. Boo! I hope that's all the winter we're going to get this year. I'm quite done with it!

I'm going to pick some collards tomorrow and probably a few turnips too. They both came through the freeze quite nicely. No apparent problems and I hope the cold helped mellow the flavors. I need a big ol bowl of collards and cornbread with some sausage. Yum!

Just about time for me to get horizontal for the night.

Have a "regular" cold front coming in tonight but the Arctic air will follow tomorrow. Back in the 20's by Saturday morning - oh yay. Thankfully, most preps are in place from the earlier front. I do have a list of things to be done before next winter! First - rebuild the pump house. It's kind of trying to melt. After nearly 40 years even the pressure treated lumber is giving up. Geeze - should I add that to the "resolution" list? Always something...

Minus 7 overnight here.
Ya'll make me feel like a total wimp complaining about the temps here, lol! But - truth is - I AM a total weather wimp and I embrace it.

So, today I'll reach down into that wet muddy hole and turn off the water valve to the pasture. Then I'll have to turn it back on when this freakish cold retreats.

I have some weather stripping to put up today. I'm on full attack against this cold and my power bill. I'm thinking a house sized insulated blanket to drop over the whole place would be great. Sigh...

Need to suit up and get outside. Critters are only patient to a point and we've passed that point.
