If your yard was as dry as mine had been for the last month or so, then, yes, DE may have worked. But it becomes ineffective when wet, as I understand, as a dessicant for insects. (Actually, we had dew on lots of mornings, so it really probably wouldn't have worked in a drought, either.
)
