glenolam's madness - April passed away

Just your thread title gets me to laughing again....you did miss it Deb. The chest beaters were in fine form. One likened the other to using a frozen turd as a tool because according to the other chest beater, sterility did not matter. There was a picture of a kid with half its head burnt off unfortunately to disbud it, may the poor animal be okay while they sort out whose the smartest goatie person on the planet.

But it isn't half as funny told the short way like that.

I'll be glad when I can quit my job. Then I can spend more time on here so I don't get lost. :D

Hey Glen - you finally got some great, supportive feedback on your disbudding question  I was mildly shocked :D

I know! I actually PM'd him to ask his opinion. I know he's a lil rough sometimes, but I still valued his feedback and since he does it my way...I mean....the wrong way I thought a little poke might get me somewhere.

It was very good feedback and I'm glad to get it! I replied, too, so let's see where this goes!

BTW....someone sent me a little note saying they guess my shurd wasn't good enough....and I replied by saying as my dog took her nightly crap out in the woods I couldn't help but giggle and think to put that shurd in the mail to someone.....

Heh heh heh heh......SHURD

and Chest Thumpers......HA! Fits right in with the Banjo Monkey's over at OFGs!

Well tell him thanks from another 'wrong' person. We are just trying to learn and it's hard when you fear getting insulted.
I have another take on it too - my goats are NOT sow goats. A little scur is not going to ruin their value. Sure, it might be a pain to deal with but it doesn't affect the milk :) I think that right there is what causes alot of the dissent at BYH. Show goats vs. Farm goats.

Well someone I know may or may not have posted the question of whether any other breeders also skalp the kids when disbudding in another goat forum. :P This is a forum with LOTS of big time show breeders...people who really know the ins and outs of goats. Their reply may or may not have been that it is TOTALLY uncessary to do that to the kids because it is definitely more of a stressor on them. They of course don't want scurs either as they do major big time shows, and they do the copper ring method. :)

So the notion that most breeders are going to the white ring method might have been a tad overblown? I could not imagine an inexperienced person such as myself getting a good result that way. I guess that's my main concern and why I chose to stick with copper rings.

I go to work and miss all the fun. I made a guess as to who was the flamer and now I am wondering.....someone pm me?

You know, I've been thinking about this.

I can see the 'burn to the skull' point a little. If you actually remove the entire bud when the kid is young by literally burning the outer perimeter off then literally cutting the entire bud off, one might assume the chance for scurs to grow is greatly reduced because the bud was completely removed. In my mind, if it's gone it's gone and has no chance to regrow back into the skull.

The pictures that I saw seemed very clean cut. Must have taken a very steady hand and I would assume there's little to no infection with open wounds like that only because they looked very clean. As long as you keep them clean I wouldn't see why that method wouldn't work.

But there's that ethical side of me that says it's just not necessary to put the kid through that. I'm pretty thick skinned when it comes to stuff (I have to hide my iron from myself right now because I want to go back and reburn my girls!!) but I can't see myself massacreing a kid's head by burning with that much pressure to cause a burn down to the skull in less than 5 seconds and then cutting off a peice of their head with a sterile knife.

Anyhoo....

Free......did you do something on purpose? ;) Just kidding - I'm not sure you read my journal so maybe you had no idea....
