Oh well, someone on BYC posted that they talked to the owners of this goat. She is a bully, has horns and doesn't get along with other goats. Explains why she's free. Definitely not a good first goat for us!

She sounds like the makings of a lovely summer sausage to me!
I had a horse trader that I used to work with a time ago. (I gave his new trades riding time and gave riding lessons at his stable.) He specialized in trading and training team roping horses. To train a horse to be a "heeler" he would often buy those mean old goats for a heeling practice animal. Evidently a mean old goat is just the thing for training a colt to follow in the right spot for his rider to heel his calf.
After they served this purpose for a time, he would load them up and take them to the processor. Later when they returned as summer sausage sticks they were quite delicious!

She did email me back and gave very little details. I asked more pointed questions. Now I'm just curious to see how much she'll divulge. I was honest and said we'd never had goats before, that we have a young son and wondered if she'd even consider placing the goat with us. She didn't say anything about it either way. Just gave the age and that she isn't currently being milked but had been in the past.

That makes me think she may also be old.
If they tried to breed her and she didn't take it may be a sign of being quite old.
If it was me (and I hope it is someday) I would spend some coin and buy a quality kid or a high quality bred older doe. Both have advantages. With a kid you have the chance of taming her like you want her. With the bred doe, you get milk right away plus an experienced mother and, if she is a high quality doe that is older, you could keep a doeling as a replacement milker.

The latest. She will be four in May. She is an excellent milker but is not currently bred. She bullies the other goats. She has horns and avoids people.
Does not sound like an ideal family pet goat for a child who loves animals!! I wrote back with that conclusion and was told they'll have kids in the spring if we're interested.
Guess we really do need to be ready before I go looking!

We usually head to Chillicothe at the end of June for a long weekend but it looks like it's not going to happen this year.Quail_Antwerp said:

We're off from school for the week. Seems like we just got back from Christmas vacation. March is going to be a looooooong
month!
We've been doing a huge clean-up of the house. My kitchen is sparkling! We've been able to get the windows open for brief periods to get some fresh air in here. I'm working on the living room now which is tough because everytime I clear a surface my son drags out some project or game to play there! Frustrating. We've got company coming for dinner tomorrow night. My husband turns 50 next Tuesday and he didn't want a big party (or a trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Go figure!) so we're having 3 couples over. Feeling the pressure to get it done. We're keeping things casual but I still want the place to look its best and smell nice, you know?
I made new curtains earlier in the week. They look so much better than the old ones!
We took Tuesday off and went to Old Sturbridge Village for the day. They have new lambs already! So cute! We had a great day. I'll post some pictures after I get some more cleaning done.
DH is shoveling out the coop. I've got bales of fresh pine shavings ready to go in. The birds have been out in the yard for a few days now. They refused to come out when there was snow on the ground. It's now officially early mud season. Yuck!
Still looking at goat ads and resisting. No point in getting too excited until we install a suitable fence!
