Hi! Welcome to SS.

I have a whole bunch of animals (sheep, chickens, ducks, horses etc) that I have raised as naturally as possible. (I was told that sheep have one foot in the grave at all times...whatever!)

In fact, I have one big fat healthy hog that is going to freezer camp this week that was only dewormed by chemicals once when he was a baby. He has since been on raw pumpkin seeds, charred wood and the forest. (Plus bananas, scarps and hard boiled eggs.)

Everyone here is very nice and very helpful, giving advice w/o being obnoxiously sarcastic.

I raise ducks and quail and move more towards natural methods all the time. Money and a lack of space keep me from going all out. I must be doing something right though. I had a coturnix quail hen and an Indian Runner duck go broody on me and hatch out youngsters. Neither one of these breeds is supposed to go broody. Getting them back closer to nature got their hormones all stirred up or something

Come on over, don't be askeered of us! We are all living on the edge.<insert evil laughter here> I have horses, sheep, a calf, chickens ducks, quail and rabbits. And if all goes well, next year I will have ~A ~ pig (just one). All my large breeds run together since this fall, my horses, calf, and sheep all eat out of the same hay bale. I don't grain feed. (anymore) I will be getting a microscope to do my own fecals (Santa, are you reading this?) I have just started running my rabbits outside, on the ground, in a movable dog kennel converted to rabbit run. Next year, I plan on having my quail out of cages and living outside in a movable tractor. Designing it will be a winter project. Like others, I am moving towards a more natural and therefore more healthy life for my critters also. I do not raise my animals for production, --strictly to raise the best meat for my family while providing the best life for my critters. (exception horses--they will never be eaten. ) I try not to post over there, but do on occasion. although, I find if I have a question, there are enough ppl here who live life like me, who know the kinds of animals I raise, who will help me with whatwever I need help with. Much more comfortable over here.

So, just being curious, but do you have goats? ( I know you Must)

No worries. I raise rabbits for meat and wool. And show and pet (enough to pay for upgrades, at least). I desparately want chickens and dairy goats, but that requires living outside of the city and convincing my stubborn fiance, lol.

hows that goatie doing? great work on seeking out folks you know (vet tech, right?) to help you ....and on soaking the hay cubes so she can eat.

if you are getting the weather pounding we are, i'd give her a bit of corn like your said - if she's under weight it will be hard for her to keep her temp up.

you know you can also go out and put a shirt or sweatshirt on her? i saw my breeder do that one time. it was hilarious then i got thinkin.. gosh that guy is smart.
