I been using a mixture of 1 part borax, 1 part baking soda. Use 2 tablespoons per load (this amount will fill up the soap cup.) Works as well as most store bought stuff.

Put vinegar in the rinsing agent cut to prevent spotting.

I say most because it does not work as well as Cascade complete with bleach. My dogs can't get dishes as clean as that stuff.

Thanks Cassandra! LOL!! I will try this recipe. Dogs do clean dishes pretty well. I have borax and baking soda.

I use what Cassandra does, only washing soda instead of baking soda. Also use vinegar for rinse aid. I was so glad to find this recipe on BYC because my "green" detergent is so expensive!

Just wanted to say that we used the homemade dishsoap mix for the first time last night and it worked well. We used the white vinegar for the rinse, also.

Has anyone figured out the price per load like the laundry mix?
If not, I will try.

Here's the info from a posting on the Laundry Detergent thread, (Hope it Helps :) :

HOMEMADE Dishwasher Detergent

For dishwasher people

this works WONDERS and cheap--here it is! I use it and it is a great cleaner.

Dishwasher soap is easy to make, and cost effective. I mix up a batch in an empty canister, and pour it in the dishwasher as needed.

Mix and use per dishwasher load:
1 Tablespoon Borax
1 Tablespoon Baking soda

OR

Mix equal parts Borax and Baking Soda, and add 2 Tablespoons per load. Increase proportion of soda for hard water. Use vinegar in the rinse cycle.

I haven't done the price per load comparison, but would like to see it if anyone else wants to take a stab at it. (I really don't. Makes my eyes ache just thinking about it.)

:p

If I figured it out right...using baking soda/Borox recipe:
2 TBSP/load costs $.058

I based that on our costs here: Borox $4.99/76 oz and Baking soda $.89/16 oz.
