Homemade laundry soap help please

I like octagon soap also. I can get it for .65 a bar at the local grocer. I had onion hands the other day and washed them with the octagon and the onion smell was gone. I haven't tried it in laundry soap yet but it is next on the list.

So, hrmmm. What would be best for laundry soap... Pure coconut oil or lard/tallow?
Lard is cheapest for me, so that is what I use. Not sure how much it really matters in terms of cleaning power. All I know is that the clothes are clean. Now, if I could only make a bar of soap that would fold everything and put it away...

I haven't been able to find washing soda... BUT we had some of a taxidermy kit left from when we did a deer mount last year.

The leftovers included about 1/2 cup of washing soda (sodium carbonate). Just enough for my 2-gallon recipe!

If you're having a hard time finding washing soda, go find a taxidermy shop and see if you can buy it from them!
