How would this proposed Shop section be different than the DIY section currently in place?

DIY compromises the things you can do with these tools but not a resource for maintenance, using, repairing and locating

Thanks. I asked because the suggestion of "making a picnic table" to go in this proposed Shop forum.

So the Shop forum proposed would be all about tools and equipment essentially? And y'all would still be using the DIY section for the things that you make with the tools / equipment?

As Nifty said, there would need to be a clear line of demarcation between topics.

If there is enough interest, discussion, and there is a clear line of demarcation between topics, it could be a great idea.
This is a great discussion. Anyone want to share some threads that you think would be great for this proposed Shop forum? Just link them here so that staff can see some examples.

Here's a few:

DIY
sharpening / peening a scythe - http://www.sufficientself.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=10877
knife sharpening - http://www.sufficientself.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3772
chain saw sharpening - http://www.sufficientself.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=4842

trash to treasure
New life for a post hole digger - http://www.sufficientself.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=9946
Maybe even something like this? Washing machine into chicken plucker - http://www.sufficientself.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=8268

This is requiring me to think too early. :D

I like Joel's suggestions. I think inventions, failed and successful, could go there. If I ever get around to making a VAWT, that would be a good arena to post a question about how to measure/draw/cut blades from PVC.

There's a lot of cross over between different categories now and I'm sure that it would be so with this one. Using the scrapheap VAWT as an example, would I place my project in the DIY or wind energy? Heck, it would even fit in the trash to treasure category. :)

But, it would definitely be the place to post how to build a full size cutting table from a sheet of plywood, organizing for efficiency, different ways to store lumber. Might be the place to ask how to remove a stripped bolt, get help for troubleshooting your old mower...

Why not call it "The Tool Shed" Gets the point across it is about tools rather than projects.
