Oh yeah suede! Or buckskin, much softer than typical leather, plus it's stretchy. To make them more durable, I bet you could glue a foot sized pad of rawhide to the bottom. The bottom is what will wear out, especially on pavement or concrete.

My dad had a pair of those but with leather straps. I think they lasted 30 years.

Boots, hmmm, in TSHTF, I suppose you could take a moccasin design & make it with buckskin, canvas or waterproof tarps. Waterproof buckskin with some beaver fat. Stitch a tire sole on the bottom for durability

where do I get a beaver?

not like they are in my backyard....hmmm.....wait at my Dads lake he did mention beaver around.....nevermind, I can get my paws on a beaver if needed.

You could use the beaver tail for a sole, too!! I'm with BBH, I think I peed my pants!!! DH thinks I've lost my brain, can't hardly type for the tears in my eyes!!!
