How do a person's political views relate to self sufficiency?

Oops (blushign). I didn't even open your thread yet, but I should rephrase. While not economically efficient, they could do a bang-up job on things they put their minds to because they did not cater to the will of the people. Yes, I'm referring to the Holocaust. I'm assuming you're referring to their abysmal economic policies, but I'll go read your thread now

Weird. It is working for me.

It just basically outlines why the people would choose communism despite its huge inefficiencies (they were abused peasants before. Communism must have looked like a birthday party to them).

Anyone remember the history lesson about the glass factory? When workers were paid by tons of material used, they made really super thick glass. When they were paid by size, they made these really weak thin panes that were huge.

OK, I can't keep up with y'all this week. So I will just post based upon my original thought at starting to read this thread and from having just read the closed topic thread.

Personally, I think the farther left you get and the farther right you get, the closer you get one to the other . . . but there are still differences that will be a huge gulf between the two.

Also, I just have to say that none of us are truly self sufficient. We rely on each other and the government to support our lives. I mean we aren't all getting out there and paving our own roads are we, yet most of us use the roads to drive to stores for our supplies, right? Even many people who have chosen to live off-grid and in the back-country have ties back to civilization for basic necessities.

I think most of us would agree that we would prefer less intervention in our daily lives by the government (whether that be food policies that don't work and yet keep small farms overly burdened, or taxes that don't always support our values).

Right. I want the gov't to have sustainable, fair economic policy, but I don't want them reading my e-mails or wire tapping.

I think this is a classic "the devil is in the details."

We agree on basics, but what does that actually mean to each of us, in a detailed way?

- I'm sure that those political attacks are planned and timed but I think the people doing them have gone temporarily insane. They need to calm down, and get a referee before they end up looking like an episode of Jerry Springer.
I wish they only covered one issue on each bill so each topic could be voted on individually. They attach unrelated bills to manipulate whether things go through or not. Line item veto is valuable but the dirtier politicians don't want it used.
I also think we have too many rules on the books.

I'm just not any particular party because none of them are perfect. Every once in a while a really good candidate will pop up but it's not consistent enough for me to want to join any of them.

But what the government is doing today (especially in the last 11 or so months) goes against everything a frugal and self-sufficient person would do if they were in financial trouble.....

When things are going bad for you, what do you do?

Do you spend less money or MORE money?

And what is the government doing? Spending less or more?

How much do our children's children's children's children's children's children now owe?

You know what FDR did in his first hundred days? He crated at least 15 major pieces of legislation into law. (sound familiar).

And...how about this executive order he signed in 1933:

"All persons are hereby required to deliver on or before May 1, 1933, to a Federal Reserve Bank or a branch or agency thereof or to any member bank of the Federal Reserve System all gold coin, gold bullion and gold certificates now owned by them."

As is evidenced by this forum and many other web sights and news sources. This country is terribly split. It has been since 2000 when the supreme court wrongfully gave the presidency to Bush. As was later proven Gore got more votes in FL. However Bush had a chance at redemption on 9/11 and he blew it. He went for the money instead. Now Obama is trying to put it back together again. Alas he has the wrong color skin to do the job. Because of that and a very incompetent congress the country is splitting even further. Now the media in all forms is doing it's best to rip this country apart for profit. I hope I die before this country does. I feel very bad for my children because I won't be able to protect them from what greed and intolerance is doing to do to this country.
