It’s the business model to have active conversation and participation, which draws in advertising clients. Starting topics which may be of interest to members here is one way to encourage that activity. Isn’t the whole point of being a member of boards like this to chat and share information? Get to know each other, compare notes?

As @flowerbug said, no one has to post anything personal on the internet that they don’t want to divulge.

So, it's good business that generates such polls.....and, incidentally, to get to know each other? Or is it to know which advertising to post? Please don't be disconcerted by my questions...I'm just trying to get to KNOW you. ;)

The farm came with a brand new tankless hot water heater, runs off propane. I absolutely love this thing, it's rated for 250 gallons per hour. My wife and I will never use that much hot water in an hour. If you can afford, get one - you won't be disappointed.

solar hot water with solar panel and converter sized to run the pump for the hot water moving. no external juice needed to run it as it only runs when the sun is out and then you set it up to drain back when the sun isn't out and the temp is too low or in danger of freezing so that there isn't damage from the cold. i think this is the most economical starter system for anyone as it heats hot water and can provide some small electric or even some heat when the hot water is all set.

after that pays for itself then you can add more solar panels for the more general electricity and since those keep improving in efficiency and lower prices through the years it will likely be even more affordable by the time the hot water setup pays for itself.

😉 Exactly!

Have you watched the Netflix film The Social Dilemma? It’s a docudrama, so it’s a little exaggerated, but it explains the very thing you are concerned about. It’s not sites like SS that are the problem, but our own smart phones, and the big players like Google, Facebook and Microsoft. Advertising is a huge business and generates a lot of profits.

But I agree with @frustratedearthmother , I’m not going to be paranoid about it. Just prudent to not post the types of information that identity thieves use. And I’m just not into the major types of social media anyway.

Oh, and we are on the grid. 100% electric. We rarely lose power, and then it’s usually just a flicker.

Edit: I forgot, our heat is geothermal with electric furnace for auxiliary.
